The vines are between 20 and 30 years old and are not planted too densely, with 3,300 vines per hectare. Work for a good vintage begins in winter with pruning the vines, followed by green manuring and early thinning of the grapes at the beginning of summer, careful selection of hand-picked grapes at the start of the harvest, 80% in mid-September and 20% when overripe until early October.

The grapes for the Nero Marche Rosso IGT 2023 are hand-picked, re-selected, and gently processed to preserve the wine's natural aromas and high quality. Today, Primitivo is probably the best-known and most sought-after grape variety of Salento and is synonymous with both quality and the almost 2000-year-old viticultural tradition of this corner of Italy. The Primitivo grapes for Don Cosimo grow on volcanic rock and granite in the typical bush vine training system, the Alberello Pugliese, which yields a lower yield per hectare but grapes of the highest quality.

The harvest is early and by hand. It skillfully combines the advantages of its grape varieties: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The red wine smells of red and black berries, spicy wood and black pepper. The Cantina Tramin Loam is dense and complex and presents itself wonderfully full-bodied on the palate with aromas of wild cherry, blackcurrant and dried fruit, notes of dark chocolate meet cedar wood and leathery tobacco pouch. But first it got cool again, which delayed full bloom, before a warm June and a humid July were followed by an August with picture-perfect weather: dry, warm during the day and already quite cool at night. Overall, it was a sunny autumn, and although there were a few rainy days, the warm days were in the majority. The 2021 harvest began about 10 days later than the annual average. The harvest volume was quite small, but the profound white wines showed an impressive freshness and delicate fruit aromas, while the red wines, like this Loam, shone with concentration, a ripe tannin structure and juicy fruit notes.

In the alpine region of South Tyrol, sites with a microclimate where late-ripening red grape varieties also reach full ripeness are rare. The Loam, made from Cabernet and Merlot, owes its expressive character to just such a weather-protected location: the hamlet of Rungg. The special nature and heat storage capacity of the clay and lime-rich soils of this vineyard also give it its name Loam, which means clay in the South Tyrolean dialect.

The 15-25 year old vines for this Cantina Tramin red wine cuvée are located in a prime location at 250-350m above sea level. The grapes were harvested by hand at the time of their optimal physiological ripeness and brought in small containers to the winery building where they were destemmed. Fermentation on the skins in large wooden vats took place at a controlled temperature (28°C) with regular pump-overs. This brings out the typical aromas more strongly and leads to an intense ruby red color. The grape varieties are vinified separately and then aged for 16 months in barrels (12 months in barriques and 6 months in large wooden vats), before the grape varieties are blended and the wine enjoys further bottle aging of at least 6 more months.

Loam – a South Tyrolean red wine and its values

Origin Italy

Growing region South Tyrol - Alto Adige DOC

Winery Cantina Tramin

Grape varieties Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc

14% vol. Lagrein is an old autochthonous grape variety that captivates with its dark ruby to garnet red color. The wine smells of violets, blackberries, and a hint of cherry, accompanied by earthy tones. The Cantina Tramin Lagrein has a pleasant fullness and shows raspberry, dark red cherry, bittersweet chocolate, black licorice, and spices on the palate in a tannic structure with a long-lasting finish. This high-quality Lagrein wonderfully complements hearty Tyrolean dishes, especially game dishes and dark meat, and can also be enjoyed with aged mountain cheeses.

Cantina Tramin – Winemaking

The mild winter of the 2024 vintage with sufficient rainfall, as well as a warm March also blessed with rain, led to an early budding of the vines. Afterwards, it was rather cool and damp until the end of June, apart from a few early summer days in April. The summer was warm with many hours of sunshine, and a rainy autumn extended the vegetation period of the grapes. Overall, 2024 was a challenging wine year, requiring many extra hours of work in the vineyard. Thanks to a consistent implementation of the quality philosophy, the experience of the winemakers, and the cooperation within the cooperative, the Cantina Tramin was able to harvest grape material of remarkable quality, especially for the white grape varieties and Pinot Noir. Thus, the white wines of the 2024 vintage are delicate and fresh, while among the reds, the elegance of the Pinot Noir stands out.

The vines for this South Tyrolean red wine grow on calcareous and gravelly clay soils on hillsides between 250 and 400 m above sea level.
