In 1983, Franz Ludwig Weninger and his wife Martina took over the farm from parents Ludwig and Rosa, and focused entirely on viticulture. In 1992, they founded a winery in Southern Hungary together with Attila Gere, and in 1997, one near the border in Sopron-Balf. Son Franz Weninger, the current owner, classically slid into the family business. He attended viticulture school in Klosterneuburg and, after an internship abroad in California, he initially took over the winery in Sopron in 2000. By 2004, it had already been converted to organic viticulture, and in 2006, biodynamic certification followed. Father Franz soon grew fond of his son's independent style of winemaking and also handed over the Burgenland winery to him in 2011.

Weingut Weninger – Organic Biodynamic

Sustainable farming, preserving natural resources, and protecting the soil for future generations are particularly close to the Weningers' hearts. Healthy soil produces distinctive wines that reflect their origin, whether they come from the loamy soils around Horitschon, on a plateau at 230m above sea level, in sites like Hochäcker, Kirchholz, and Dürrau, or from cool, chalky soils like in the Kalkofen site, or from stony, warm sites at the height of Lake Neusiedl, like the Steiner site. Franz now lives in Horitschon again and manages both wineries together with his wife Petra: 24 hectares in Austria and 25 hectares in Hungary. Blaufränkisch is dominant here, or Kékfrankos, as it is called in Hungarian, but Furmint, Pinot Blanc (Fehérburgundi), and Syrah are also cultivated at Weingut Weninger. The Sopron site, Steiner, is located right at the southwest tip. Around 130 years ago, the Furmint Ausbruch originating from here was world-famous; in the city chronicle of 1680, it was classified as the most valuable vineyard in all of Western Hungary (today's Burgenland). But then came phylloxera, the two world wars, and the Iron Curtain. So Franz replanted Furmint: the scions for this came from the genetic vine heritage of Michael Wenzel from Rust and Attila Homonna from Tokaj. The first vintage in 2018 proved natural wine pioneer Weninger's gut feeling right: Furmint belongs here!

The grape variety, with its vigorous growth, buds quite early, making it susceptible to frost. It ripens very slowly and is usually not harvested until the end of October. Of the approximately 5300 hectares of vineyards worldwide, 4200 are in Hungary, mainly in the Tokaj wine region. But don't worry, Franz Weninger harvests his grapes early and vinifies the Furmint dry.

And it is already a rarity, this assertive archetype of a Furmint: bone-dry yet with a ripe, golden aroma, powerful without being heavy, rather little fruit, but with overflowing minerality and a flintstone character that lingers in the long finish. The barren soil seems ideal for the grape variety. 5,800 vines are planted per hectare in a Guyot training system and compete for water and nutrients, rooting deeply into the soil.
