The Sauvignon Blanc from Weingut Wohlmuth is an elegant representative of its grape variety, rather restrained on the nose, but on the palate, it reveals its spectrum of aromas of ripe yellow fruits such as apricots and mirabelles, as well as red fruits like red currants, with a hint of something vegetal, sweet red pepper, and always with the delicate slate spice, a wonderfully cool minerality, finesse, and precision. This classic showcases the ingenious interplay of grape variety, soil, location, and winemaking craftsmanship, which has a 200-year tradition at the Wohlmuth family.

Wohlmuth – Wine Production

The Sauvignon Blanc vines grow on absolutely steep vineyard slopes on phyllitic slate soils, reddish and black in color. This slate is thinly layered, sometimes a bit more compact with inclusions of quartz, sericites, and potassium feldspar. Under the influence of the Illyrian climate, which brings warm winds from the Mediterranean and cool winds from the northern Alps to Kitzeck in Southern Styria, and with much manual labor on the steep slopes, which requires an admirable connection to home, this dry white wine with an unmistakable, complex fruit expression is created.

All grapes are selectively hand-picked. Since the vineyards are located around the winery, long transport routes are not necessary. After a maceration period of 6-14 hours, slow temperature-controlled fermentation takes place at approx. 20 degrees. To preserve the fragrance and freshness, the wine is aged on fine lees in stainless steel tanks until bottling at the end of February.

Even though the Sauvignon Blanc grape variety does not have such a long tradition in Styria, it has found a place there where it finds optimal conditions and produces wines of international stature. The grape variety originates from a cross between Traminer and Chenin Blanc and originally comes from the Loire. It has small, densely packed berries. Its vigorous growth requires good canopy management, as its aromatic compounds, methoxypyrazines and mercaptans, are light-sensitive. Its characteristic bouquet ranges from grassy, green-fruited notes and notes of bell pepper in not fully ripe grapes to an expressive variety of aromas of elderflower, gooseberry, cassis, and tropical fruits like passion fruit in ripe harvested grapes. In Styria, superb premium wines with great development potential are produced, which are among the best worldwide.

The Sauvignon Blanc Südsteiermark is a classic regional wine from the Southern Styria region and a versatile food companion for fish and seafood, and also spring vegetables like asparagus.

Sauvignon Blanc Südsteiermark – a wine and its values

Origin Wine from Austria

Growing region Southern Styria

Grape variety Sauvignon Blanc

vegan

sustainably certified

12.5 % vol. alcohol

6.5 g/l acidity

2.2 g/l residual sugar

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0998/4960/1350/files/wohlmuth-sauvignon-blanc-suedsteiermark-2024_948922d0-c2c1-4d38-a88f-33f44c1b7831.jpg?v=1776144165
wieninger-wiener-gruener-veltliner-2024
Viennese Grüner Veltliner – 2024

Enjoy Vienna in a Glass – Viennese Grüner Veltliner from Weingut Wieninger

The Wieninger Wiener Grüner Veltliner 2024 is a fresh, vibrant white wine from the top vineyards of Bisamberg and Nussberg. After harvesting, the grapes remain on the mash for a few hours, then gently pressed and spontaneously fermented. The Chardonnay Leithaberg underwent a natural malolactic fermentation, in which the more aggressive malic acid is converted into milder lactic acid. The Sopron site, Steiner, is located right at the southwest tip. Around 130 years ago, the Furmint Ausbruch originating from here was world-famous; in the city chronicle of 1680, it was classified as the most valuable vineyard in all of Western Hungary (today's Burgenland). But then came phylloxera, the two world wars, and the Iron Curtain. So Franz replanted Furmint: the scions for this came from the genetic vine heritage of Michael Wenzel from Rust and Attila Homonna from Tokaj. For legal reasons, the wine cannot be called by the name of the Steiner site, so Franz simply calls it Stein. Here, gneiss and mica schist reach the surface, making the soil porous, dry, and warm. The barren soil seems ideal for the grape variety. 5,800 vines are planted per hectare in a Guyot training system and compete for water and nutrients, rooting deeply into the soil. The grape variety originates from a cross between Traminer and Chenin Blanc and originally comes from the Loire. It has small, densely packed berries. Its vigorous growth requires good canopy management, as its aromatic compounds, methoxypyrazines and mercaptans, are light-sensitive. Its characteristic bouquet ranges from grassy, green-fruity, and notes of bell pepper in not fully ripe grapes to an expressive aromatic diversity of elderflower, gooseberry, cassis, and tropical fruits like passion fruit in ripe harvested grapes. The aging took place first for 6 months on the full lees in oak barrels and then for another 4 months on the fine lees in steel tanks, before it was bottled in September 2017.

Grüner Veltliner Seeberg – a wine and its values

Origin Wine from Austria

Growing region Kamptal

Vineyard / Ried Seeberg

Grape variety Riesling

13.0% vol. It has long been known as a particularly good site and is therefore also classified as an ÖTW Erste Lage. Due to the mild winter, vegetation started very early, leading to budburst and the first greenery by mid-April. However, in the last week of April, there was a cold snap with late frost. This resulted in 30% frost damage in Langenlois and Gumpoldskirchen. The late spring and summer months were characterized by muggy weather with much precipitation and occasional heatwaves. Biologically working winemakers were therefore very challenged in vineyard management. The unusually warm, sunny, and dry September finally ensured a harmonious end to the wine year. It helped the grapes achieve very good ripeness. The cooler nights at the end of the month led to optimal aroma development. Due to the weather situation, there was no time pressure during the harvest. The result was grape material with pronounced ripeness and nutrient supply. Work in the cellar proceeded smoothly. Healthy grapes with moderate sugar content produced clear, medium-bodied wines with beautiful varietal and regional characteristics.

awarded wine

95 Wine Enthusiast,

95 - 3rd Place Falstaff Ried Cup

94 Falstaff

94 wein.pur - Trophy Winner

94 JamesSuckling.com's Top 100 Austrian Wines of 2017

94+ A la Carte Grand Cru Riesling

93 Wine Advocate

91 Best of Riesling

4 Stars Vinaria Guide

Organic control body AT-BIO-402 – Austrian Agriculture

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0998/4960/1350/files/fred-loimer-riesling-ried-seeberg-2016_54f563cb-e98e-4e96-ad69-92bc93dfa450.jpg?v=1776144687
thieryweber-gruener-veltliner-kremstal-reserve-2016
Grüner Veltliner Kremstal Reserve – 2016

Grüner Veltliner Kremstal Reserve – Erste Lage Ried Gebling

The Grüner Veltliner Kremstal Reserve 2016 from Thiery Weber comes from the Erste Lage Ried Gebling vineyard. The grape variety requires early, warm locations with clay or loess soils, as it is quite susceptible to frost and fungal diseases. The thick-skinned berries are greenish-yellow to red in color, which largely depends on sun exposure, and ripen late and very unevenly. Their juice is translucent. Yield reduction is absolutely necessary, as Roter Veltliner is extremely high-yielding and would only produce thin, expressionless wines if left untrimmed. However, if it has an optimal location with perfect soils, as is the case with the Eisenhut from Nimmervoll winery, is cared for in the vineyard, thrives healthily, and is properly pruned for yield, Roter Veltliner produces extract-rich, aromatic wines with good acid structure, enormous development potential, and long aging capacity. The start of vegetation in spring took place under ideal conditions. Gerhard and his team could only manage the rapid growth of the vines with countless hours of work. The first half of June brought a slightly shattered bloom. However, the result was loosely clustered, smaller grapes. The initial course for a great vintage was set. July brought abundant rain, requiring good canopy management. Gerhard ensured an airy but still shading canopy wall. August saw numerous dry and hot days. Harvesting began on September 9th, and the musts surprised with advanced ripeness and a very pronounced aromatic depth. The harvest was brought in over 14 picking days until October 11th, consistently interrupted by rain showers. Due to cool nights, there was almost no botrytis pressure.
