By the very next harvest, Florian was already standing among the incredibly fragrant citrus trees on his friend's orchard. These trees grow at the foot of Mount Etna on fertile volcanic soil, which is organically farmed. Florian got to know the land and its people and fell a little bit in love with the Sicilian's wonderful citrus fruits. Back home in the Black Forest, he experimented with the blood oranges he had brought back, and the result was simply sensational.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGrazie amico mio! The Tarocco blood orange is a bit more discreet than the more common Moro variety, playing with floral notes and a hint of vanilla. Steeped in high-proof alcohol, the wonderfully intense, essential oils are extracted from the peel of the blood oranges, captured in this Italian-German friendship.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003eSpirit instead of Brandy – Florian explains\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA spirit made from citrus fruits is not a brandy, but a \"Geist\" (spirit). \"A Geist,\" Florian explains to us, \"opens up possibilities for the distiller to do familiar things differently and to play with the unfamiliar.\" Unlike with brandy, Florian uses fruits that cannot be mashed and fermented due to their low sugar content, such as the blood orange from Sicily. \"Here, we take a piece of nature,\" Florian continues, \"steep it in the purest grain alcohol so that it can release its full aroma into the alcohol, and then distill this flirtation after a short time. This way, only clear notes enter the distillate. What we save in time, we add in fruit.\" With the good, soft water of the Black Forest, the spirit is then reduced to drinking strength (42% vol. alcohol) and filled without chill filtration into classic 500ml frosted glass bottles, which are reserved for the four citrus spirits. \"The result: a highly harmonious paradox.
