Großes Gewächs from the Pettenthal vineyard in Rheinhessen. The extreme conditions to which the vines in Pettenthal are exposed are the reason why our Riesling has an almost Burgundian character. As long as the soil provides sufficient nutrients, the fruit aromas can develop. In Pettenthal, however, stone dominates, conjuring up entirely different aromas in the wine than fruit: tobacco, spice, wildness. A delicate note of white almonds runs through the wine, which, despite its wildness, is seductively smooth on the palate and rewards with an almost endless finish.

Kühling-Gillot – Nierstein Pettenthal Riesling

In Nackenheim, the red rock of the underground slate band begins to emerge from the earth for the first time and run along the Rhine bank, before this band disappears underground again a few kilometers south in Nierstein. Lined up like pearls on a string, directly exposed to the influence of the Rhine, are the unique vineyard sites Rothenberg, Pettenthal, Hipping, and Ölberg. With Ölberg, the Roter Hang swings westward and moves away from the Rhine again. These few kilometers between Nackenheim and Nierstein are the heart of Rheinhessen slate Riesling.

South of Rothenberg lies the Pettenthal site. In fact, the two sites merge into each other as part of the Roter Hang, so that the orientation, slope, and soil composition are almost identical. In all likelihood, the name Pettenthal dates back to the time when the vineyards were still church-owned (Paters Tal = Valley of the Monks). Here, too, red slate clay and red sandstone, the famous "Rotliegende," dominate.

At approx. 170 meters, Pettenthal is slightly higher than Rothenberg, and the soil is therefore a touch leaner, so that the vines have to root very deeply in the soft stone to get nutrients and minerals. The higher and steeper the parcels, the more difficult the living conditions for the vines. And that is the prerequisite for great wines.

The Kühling-Gillot family, Carolin and Hans Oliver, cultivate a parcel in Pettenthal with a more than 70% slope, the steepest vineyard parcel in Rheinhessen. In addition, the rock band that runs through the entire Roter Hang is most pronounced here. The humus layer is extremely thin and nutrients for the vine can only be found deep in the stony soil. Mechanical cultivation is completely impossible. Here, only manual labor is possible.

The parcel has been cultivated according to organic guidelines for several years, and with the 2014 vintage, the soil structure, the stability of the vines, and the quality of the grapes are so high that the Riesling from the Pettenthal vineyard is bottled as VDP.Großes Gewächs.

The Nierstein Pettenthal Riesling reflects everything that Rhine wines have been so famous for for so long: the extract of the Riesling grapes gives it body, the stony-porous clay slate soil opens up the wine and gives it tautness and finesse. The Nierstein Riesling Pettenthal completes the range of sites in the central part of the Roter Hang. Through late and extremely meticulous selection in the vineyard, combined with ideally ripened grapes, the finest fruit aromas, a wonderful juiciness, extract, and enormous complexity are combined. A great tribute to the Roter Hang in Nierstein.

a wine and its values

Origin Wine from Germany

Growing region Rheinhessen

Grape variety Riesling

12.5% vol. alcohol

7.0 g/l acidity

2.5 g/l residual sugar

92 points Gault Millau

90 points Eichelmann

Organic inspection body DE-ÖKO-039 – German agriculture

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0998/4960/1350/files/kuehling-gillot-nierstein-pettenthal-riesling-gg-2020_cbcee737-3e5b-4711-88de-1b0b7fe49bcc.jpg?v=1776144739
