Introducing: Organic Sparkling Wine Cuvée Elena by Andres & Mugler

For the Andres & Mugler Organic Sparkling Wine Cuvée Elena Brut Nature, Chardonnay and Auxerrois are combined with white-pressed Schwarzriesling, also known as Pinot Meunier in Champagne, to create unique cuvées with an unmistakable character. This results in a sparkling wine of the highest quality, probably unique in Germany with this grape composition. Elegant and mineral, aromatic, cool, very dry with subtle yeast notes, more stone than fruit, rather slender than opulent.

The complex Burgundy cuvée has aromas of citrus fruits, juicy pineapple, a hint of peach, and tart-ethereal notes of sage. On the palate, the organic sparkling wine impresses with its cool elegance and delicate mousseux. The Andres & Mugler Cuvée Elena Brut Organic Sparkling Wine is produced using traditional bottle fermentation.

Organic Sparkling Wine – How Cuvée Elena Brut is Made

The Burgundy grapes for this Andres Mugler organic sparkling wine grow on mineral soils in the Palatinate, in Ruppertsberg, Deidesheim, and Maikammer. The cool winds from the nearby Palatinate Forest ensure a good acid structure in the early-harvested base wines, which is essential for good sparkling wine.

The quality philosophy of the Andres Mugler sparkling wine manufacturer begins with careful soil cultivation and consistent greening. The vineyard work of Michael Andres and Steffen Mugler is pure craftsmanship, characterized by a great love for biodynamics. The rhythm of nature largely determines their actions. For both, healthy soil, intact flora and fauna, and thus vigorous vines are prerequisites for a healthy circular economy. They hand-harvest all biodynamically cultivated vineyards to bring the grapes undamaged to the winery in Ruppertsheim.

Here, Chardonnay, Auxerrois, and the red-skinned Schwarzriesling are gently pressed, because the gentler the pressing, the fewer tannins and wax from the berry skins enter the must, and the finer and more long-lasting the perlage in the sparkling wine will be. Only about two-thirds of the juice present in the berries is pressed.

In the cellar, Steffen Mugler and Michael Andres give their sparkling wines time. The grapes are allowed to ferment slowly and undergo malolactic fermentation, in which the malic acid in the wine is converted into the milder lactic acid, giving the sparkling wine base a special mouthfeel and creaminess. Around 20 percent of the Chardonnay is aged in barrique, which adds even more complexity to the cuvée.

The following year, the Cuvée Elena is blended, bottled, and tirage is added to trigger the second fermentation in the bottle. Now it is allowed to rest and mature on the fine lees for another year, regularly undergoing riddling until the bottles are gradually inverted, and finally, during manual disgorgement, the yeast plug is removed from the bottle, and the Andres Mugler Organic Sparkling Wine Cuvée Elena Brut, with the addition of a dosage, rests in the bottle until "it is good when it comes out," as Steffen emphasizes. 2018 is the current vintage.

Andres & Mugler – The Sparkling Wine Makers

The Andres & Mugler sparkling wine manufacturer in Ruppertsberg was founded in 1989 by two friends and Palatinate winemakers, Michael Andres and Steffen Mugler. In the early years, base wines were purchased and made into sparkling wine, but since 1993, only grapes from their own cultivation have been processed into sparkling wine. On a total of 17 hectares (7 hectares for Michael and 10 hectares for Steffen), the winery practices biodynamic viticulture, cultivating Riesling and white Burgundy varieties such as Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois, and Chardonnay, as well as Schwarzriesling (Pinot Meunier) and Pinot Noir in the best vineyards of the Palatinate. From these grapes, German sparkling wine with an unmistakable, elegant style is produced using traditional bottle fermentation. Sparkling wine from Germany of the highest quality and organic. In 2018, two sparkling wines were rated as very good for the first time at the Meininger Deutscher Sektpreis, and in 2021, Eichelmann Deutschlands Weine awarded them the prize for the best sparkling wine collection of 2021. All honor to them. The Andres & Mugler winery is a member of "die Sektmacher," the association of traditional sparkling wine producers.
