La Compagnie du Miel – Honey from Madagascar
La Compagnie du Miel imports honey from Madagascar. This French project is an adventure driven by wonderful encounters centered on shared values and passions. Gaël Hankenne moved to Madagascar in 2013 after traveling through Africa for several years for Médecins Sans Frontières. Olivier Carbon comes from the world of microfinance and has known Big Island, as Madagascar is also called, for over 10 years. In 2016, they both met Haingo Rakotobe, an ecology consultant, and the idea for beekeeping took shape. Thibaut Lugagne Delpon lived in Madagascar for four years and discovered social entrepreneurship by building a network of inclusive businesses across the island. All four fell in love with the country, its people, and these extraordinary honeys. Their shared mission: excellent honey as a social and ecological project. This is how La Compagnie du Miel was founded in 2017. Today, Thibaut works from Paris, developing the brand and sales.
Compagnie du Miel – ethical honey from Africa
Africa in general, and Madagascar in particular, have the immense advantage of having been spared industrialization. Madagascar offers a unique biodiversity worldwide, and beekeeping can still develop here without the constraints we know from Europe. La Compagnie du Miel selects partner villages whose regions have a high density of honey-bearing flowers. The beekeepers are trained and receive daily support. Hives are pre-financed, and honey is purchased at a fixed, fair price. To guarantee the purity of monofloral honeys, very precise geolocalization is determined for the installation of the hives. This ensures complete traceability and a very high quality standard. Small-scale beekeepers face challenges: with 20 hives, a beekeeper lives above the poverty line. With 50 hives, they enter the middle class. This is what Gaël, Oliver, Haingo, and Thibaut aim to achieve. Beekeeping has a positive impact not only on purchasing power but also on nature. The pollination work of the bees improves fruit quality and orchard productivity. This encourages communities to participate in the project.
