Balthasar Ress – Rheingau Riesling
The winery Balthasar Ress from Hattenheim is known for Rheingau Riesling. The history of the Ress family is long and dates back to the 19th century. Originally, the Resses were enterprising butchers in Hattenheim. In 1870, Balthasar Ress founded a winery and a wine trade business, as well as an inn. The brand "Von Unserem" dates from this period, and its wines remain a crucial pillar for the Ress family today. In 1894, Balthasar Ress purchased the later legendary Kronenschlösschen from an insolvency estate. All Ress descendants evidently possessed a good business acumen. They gradually acquired what is now the "Altes Gutshaus," more and more vineyard acreage in good locations such as "Hattenheimer Engelmannsberg," "Berg Rottland," the monopoly site "Schloss Reichartshausen," "Hattenheimer Nussbrunnen," as well as the Engel wine house in Drosselgasse and the Hasensprung export winery.
Balthasar Ress – with innovative ideas
Since 1989, Balthasar Ress has been a member of the VDP, the elite of German viticulture – easily recognizable by the eagle on the wine bottle. Today, the winery covers 55 hectares and has been managed by Christian Ress, the fifth generation, since 2010. He, too, possesses a keen sense for good business and creates a stir not only with consistent quality management but also with innovative ideas, such as establishing the northernmost vineyard on Sylt and opening the wineBANK in Hattenheim.
