Weingut Metzger – Family Tradition in the Palatinate
Weingut Metzger from the Palatinate is a typical Palatinate winery, offering a wide range of white and red wines from many different grape varieties such as Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris), Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Scheurebe, Chardonnay, Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Dornfelder, and Portugieser. Common to all of them is their incredible drinkability, which quickly empties the bottle.
Uli Metzger from Asselheim in the Northern Palatinate is a true Palatinate native. Viticulture has a 100-year tradition in the Metzger family. In 2010, he took over his parents' business, Weingut Metzger in Asselheim near Grünstadt in the Palatinate. For 23 years, he had already been working at the previously unknown winery. At that time, the family owned nearly 20 hectares of vineyards in good and very good locations with pronounced limestone soils; today, it is 45 hectares.
Weingut Metzger – A Cattle Points the Way
And although Uli Metzger had long been responsible for both vineyard work and winemaking at the winery, producing good quality wines, success was slow to come. It was only with the redesign of the wine labels that the wine world took notice of Metzger wines. The idea to focus on the family name Metzger and prominently display it on the bottles came from the next generation at Weingut Metzger, from daughter Lea Metzger.
Since then, a distinctive cattle, and sometimes even a flying pig, adorns the wine label, an unmistakable trademark. To make it easier for customers to find the right wine for them, the quality levels of Gutswein (estate wine), Ortswein (village wine), and Lagenwein (single vineyard wine) were also named with terms like Flanke (flank), Pastorenstück (pastor's piece), and Filet (fillet), i.e., butchery terms. This makes it easy to navigate Weingut Metzger's product range.
In 2014, Uli Metzger caused a sensation by winning 1st place in the German Red Wine Award in the Spätburgunder category with his Arthos, and at the same time, 2nd place in the Cuvées category with his Dry Age. Since then, top ratings and awards have poured in. Mundus Vini, Gault Millau, Vinum, Der Feinschmecker – no one can ignore the wines of Weingut Metzger anymore. Neither can we.
