NURI Sardines – Canned Fish from Portugal, Hand-Packed in Yellow Tins
You can instantly spot the yellow tin with its embossed lines on the shelf. Inside are whole sardines from the Atlantic, each piece hand-packed and filled with olive oil. NURI is the brand of the Conservas Pinhais factory in the port town of Matosinhos near Porto, founded in 1920 and trading under this name since 1935.
Handcrafted in 37 Steps
Gutting, heading, cleaning, packing: Each tin undergoes 37 steps, and almost all of them are done by hand instead of machines. Only the pouring of olive oil and sealing are automated. This takes time and explains why the fish lie so uniformly and perfectly preserved in the tin. Since 2016, Jakob Glatz has been leading the company, with the stated goal of changing nothing in this process.
Mild, Spicy, in Tomato, or with Lemon
It's best to start with the Sardines in Olive Oil: mild, tender, pleasantly understated. The Sardines in Spicy Olive Oil bring more heat, and, one step up, the extra spicy version. The Sardines in Tomato Sauce are rounder and more family-friendly; with Piri-Piri, they are also available spicy. The Lemon Edition is perfect for summer.
Mackerel has a stronger flavor than sardines. The Mackerel Fillets in Olive Oil and their spicy sister come boneless, while the small mackerels are whole and petite, also with heat. If you want to give a gift or try several varieties side-by-side, take the 4-tin gift box.
Where to Buy NURI Sardines?
It's difficult in supermarkets: Edeka or Rewe only sporadically stock the yellow tins, usually just one variety, and they are much more common in Austria than in Germany. If you want variety, buy from a specialty food store. We offer the complete range with ten varieties and the gift box.
How to Serve NURI
Open the tin, place some good bread next to it, drizzle with a little lemon – that's all you need for a weeknight dinner. When guests come, we set out several varieties and let everyone discover their spice tolerance. Olives, pickled peppers, and a chilled white wine pair well with them.
