Zilliken – Saarburger Rausch GG 2023 – Grand Cru from the Saar
The Zilliken Saarburger Rausch GG 2023 is a dry, elegant Riesling from the VDP.GROSSE LAGE, the steep vineyard Saarburger Rausch. The grapes grow on a unique soil formation characterized by Devonian slate and diabase. Diabase is a basalt flint that produces a very distinctive, unmistakable minerality. After selective hand-picking of the best parcels with old, ungrafted vines, whole cluster pressing and spontaneous fermentation take place in the old cellar below the new vinotheque, and the wine is aged in neutral Fuder barrels. The delicate yet profound Zilliken Riesling exudes a subtle scent of ripe melon, fresh lemon cream and floral summer meadows, with a hint of herbs, tangerine on the palate, candied lemon and tropical passion fruit, and a gripping acidity that is topped by a mineral saltiness. The incredibly long finish of this wonderful wine from a great vintage hints at the immense potential slumbering in this Grand Cru. We will know in 10 years.

Even though the Zilliken Riesling Saarburger Rausch is already captivating when young, it only reveals its full potential after 10-20 years of bottle aging. Try it out, we also have aged Rieslings from Weingut Forstmeister Geltz Zilliken stored. Or you can practice patience, because the future of Zilliken Auslese looks rosy.
By the way, our warehouse is cooled in summer and heated in winter by a geothermal heat pump powered by a photovoltaic system, so that the wine can mature optimally.
The 2023 vintage on the Saar
The mild spring woke the vines from their winter dormancy early. The dry weather conditions provided ideal prerequisites for a smooth flowering. In July and August, the long-awaited rains provided the necessary water supply for the vines, allowing them to thrive vigorously. We began selective hand-picking as early as September 25, 2023 – unusually early.
Thanks to this elaborate manual work, only the best grapes from our steep slopes made it to the press house for pressing. The weather also cooperated during the harvest: cool nights and moderate daytime temperatures ensured that the grapes could retain their fresh acidity.
We were able to complete the harvest on October 18 – just in time before the persistent rain set in.
