Blaufränkisch Leithaberg DAC – Gernot Heinrich from Burgenland
The Gernot Heinrich Blaufränkisch Leithaberg 2017 is an organic red wine grown in old vineyards on the eastward-sloping hillsides of the Leitha Mountains in Jois, Winden, and Breitenbrunn, facing Lake Neusiedl, characterized by the region's typical fossil-rich limestone and calcareous sandstone, as well as mica schist. On the nose, it exudes a complex fruitiness of red currants, ripe cherries, and tart blueberries, meeting peaty autumn leaves, fresh truffles, and roasted root vegetables. On the palate, in addition to the complexity of its aromas, it shows taut acidity, fine-grained tannins, and an astonishingly lean, stony length with a chalky origin.
Gernot Heinrich – Winemaking
The Blaufränkisch grapes, hand-picked from late September to early October, come from vineyards cultivated biodynamically by Heike and Gernot Heinrich with great manual effort and care. After harvesting, the grapes remain in wooden fermentation vats on the skins for three weeks, undergoing spontaneous fermentation, and then gently pressed with a basket press. The Blaufränkisch Leithaberg matured for 25 months in used 500-liter oak barrels before being bottled in December 2019.
