Late Harvest Red – Gernot Heinrich's Red Spätlese

The Gernot Heinrich late harvest red 2014 is an organic late harvest wine made from red grape varietals, grown on the oldest and best hillside vineyards of Gols in Burgenland, Austria. A unique wine that can only be produced in exceptional years.

The late harvest red from Weingut Heinrich is a powerful red wine reminiscent of a vintage port. It boasts an enticing dark berry aroma and captivates the connoisseur with subtle herbal spice and a hint of cedarwood and tobacco. The residual sweetness expertly buffers the alcohol, so the wine appears neither sweet nor alcoholic. This red Spätlese from Burgenland pairs wonderfully with dark chocolate and accompanies chocolate cake as well as duck with red cabbage.

Gernot Heinrich – Winemaking

The Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, and Merlot grapes, affected by botrytis and hand-picked in early October, come from southwest-facing vineyards characterized by glacial red terrace gravel and fine-grained sandy-loamy sedimentary soils. Heike and Gernot Heinrich cultivate their vineyards organically and biologically, with great manual effort and respect. After harvesting, the grapes undergo spontaneous fermentation and remain on the skins for two weeks in wooden fermenters and stainless steel tanks before being gently pressed. The late harvest red matured for 52 months in wooden fermenters and stainless steel tanks before being bottled at the end of March 2019.
