Gernot Heinrich Muscat Freyheit - Natural Wine from Austria
The Heinrich Muscat Freyheit 2022 from the Gernot Heinrich winery, which owes its name to the 85% Muskat Ottonel content, is an unfiltered natural wine from Austria bottled in a clay bottle. Here, the winemaker simply wanted to be free, to try something new, without being bound by conventions. The result is an incredibly fragrant, complex food companion with a creamy texture and thirst-quenching bitterness. A whole carpet of aromas floods the nose: tropical fruits like kumquats and Sharon fruit, sweet and tart grapefruit, as well as vegetal notes of fresh coriander, wheatgrass, and fennel seeds. On the palate, it's not overwhelming, shows creaminess, and actually makes you want the next sip.
Heinrich – Winemaking with Respect
In the Muscat Freyheit, Muskat Ottonel and Weißburgunder come together. The Muskat Ottonel grows on sandy, gravelly-loamy sediment soil on the southern slope of the Parndorf Plateau. The Weißburgunder mostly comes from the top sites Breitenbrunner Edelgraben and Windener Alter Berg, meaning from lime and slate-rich eastern slopes of the Leitha Mountains. The vineyards are in conversion to biodynamic cultivation.
The grapes, hand-picked at the beginning of September 2022, fermented spontaneously and were left on the skins for 13 days before being gently pressed in a basket press. The Muscat Freyheit underwent natural malolactic fermentation, in which the more aggressive malic acid is converted into milder lactic acid. This brings typical notes and, above all, a pleasant creaminess to the wine, which was allowed to mature for 9 months on its natural lees in amphorae before being bottled unfiltered and without added sulfur in mid-June 2023. Please shake before enjoying!
