Karl May – Geyersberg Pinot Noir – [ORGANIC]
The Karl May Geyersberg Pinot Noir 2020 is an elegant Pinot Noir from the Bechtheimer Geyersberg vineyard. The nose offers aromas of red fruits such as cherries, cassis, and raspberries, complemented by sweet notes of tobacco and dark cocoa, as well as roasted aromas and bacon with an herb crust. On the palate, it is powerful and dense, velvety with supple tannins, finely spiced, with enormous depth and perfectly integrated oak. Multi-layered, complex, and long-lasting.
The 2014 vintage was awarded 90 out of 100 points and a silver medal at the Decanter World Wine Award 2017.
Karl May Wine – Production
The vines for this red wine cuvée from the Karl May winery grow on the south-facing Bechtheimer Geyersberg site. The organically cultivated, older vines are deeply rooted in the calcareous, light loess soil, which warms up quickly and produces complex red wines.
To harvest ripe grapes in autumn, Fritz and Peter May begin in January with gentle pruning and early defoliation of the grape zone for optimal sun exposure, as well as yield reduction through green harvesting. The early, selective hand-picking of grapes from the best vines in the top site takes place in several passes.
The journey to the new winery is short, where the Pinot Noir grapes are gently processed. After traditional maceration in open vats, the must is gently pressed, spontaneously fermented, and aged for 18 months in 20% new barriques and 80% used barriques made of French oak, then bottled unfiltered. Karl May's single-vineyard Pinot Noir Geyersberg is a prime example of classic Pinot Noir.
