Riesling 2024 – Organic Estate Wine from Weingut Karl May
The Riesling Gutswein 2024 from Weingut Karl May is characterized by the aroma of crisp pome fruit, such as yellow apple and juicy pear, with a delicate citrus note accompanying it into an herbaceous finish. This is an estate wine that begs to be drunk because it's so enjoyable: dry, fruity, juicy. A mouthful of wine!
Its fruitiness, paired with a good acid balance, moderate alcohol content, and delicate minerality, makes the Karl May Riesling a great food companion. Well-chilled, it pairs well with fish, meat, and vegetables. We recommend a medium-sized glass and a serving temperature of 8-10 degrees Celsius.
Marcus Hofschuster from wein.Plus chose this 2020 Riesling Gutswein as his favorite wine and describes it as follows: "If the entry-level wine is a winery's business card, then this one is made of the finest handmade paper with gold embossing and all the bells and whistles. Because it's tight, cool, immensely juicy, grippy and precise, even now, though still so young, and a touch reductive, incredibly animating. It doesn't get any better for this price point!"
Winemaking – Karl May
The Riesling from Weingut Karl May is a dry estate wine from Rheinhessen, from the winegrowing community of Bechtheim, located on the edge of the Wonnegau region. There, on sandy loess-loam soil with a south-southeast orientation, the grapes for Karl May's Riesling grow in the Heligkreuz vineyard site, in organically farmed vineyards.
To harvest ripe grapes in autumn, Fritz and Peter May begin in January with gentle pruning and early defoliation of the grape zone for optimal sun exposure, as well as yield reduction through green harvesting in early summer. Selective hand harvesting of the grapes often takes place in several passes. The path to the new winery is not far, where the grapes are gently processed. The mash is gently pressed, and the must is spontaneously fermented, remains on the lees for a long time, and is aged in stainless steel tanks.
