Karl May Wine – Pinot Gris Osthofen – [ORGANIC]
The Pinot Gris Osthofen 2022 is a Karl May wine from the Wonnegau in Rheinhessen. Characterized by aging in wooden barrels, it presents itself full-bodied and powerful on the palate, with ripe pear and red apple, sweet honeydew melon, spicy herbal notes, toasted nuts, and brioche captivating the mouth and nose. Plenty of richness and a mineral salinity round off this impression.
Despite its volume, the Karl May Wine Pinot Gris Osthofen is an elegant food companion for heartier dishes, such as pan-fried pork with mushrooms in cream sauce, cod with a nut crust and pumpkin vegetables, or well-aged cheese. We recommend a large glass and a serving temperature of 10-12 degrees Celsius. The 2020 vintage was awarded a fantastic 94 Suckling points.
Karl May Wine – Preparation
The Karl May Wine Pinot Gris Osthofen is a Pinot Gris of international caliber from the oldest Pinot Gris vineyards in the best sites of Osthofener Goldberg and Bechtheimer Geyersberg on the edge of the Wonnegau. There, on deep loess soils interspersed with calcareous marl, the grapes for Karl May's Pinot Gris Osthofen grow on vines up to 40 years old in organically farmed vineyards.
To harvest fully ripe grapes in autumn, Fritz and Peter May begin in January with gentle pruning and early defoliation of the grape zone for optimal sun exposure, as well as yield reduction through green harvesting in early summer. Selective hand-picking of the grapes often takes place in several picking rounds. The journey to the new winery is not far, where the grapes are gently processed further. After a short maceration period, they are gently pressed, and the must spontaneously ferments in wooden barrels, where it remains on the lees for 6 months and is then aged in wood. This brings power and complexity, richness and creaminess to the local wine.
