Grauburgunder – Organic Estate Wine from Winery Karl May
The Grauburgunder 2024 estate wine from Winery Karl May is characterized by the aroma of crisp pome fruit, such as yellow apple and Williams pear, with fragrant apricot and sweet melon added, leading to an herbal-spicy finish. A true all-rounder: dry, with a medium body and good acidity balance, and moderate alcohol content.
Karl May's Grauburgunder is a true European with many names. In Switzerland, it's called Malvoisie, in France Pinot Gris, and in Italy Pinot Grigio. Its fruitiness combined with rich aromas and minerality makes it a good food companion, perfect for German and international cuisine, such as vegetable appetizers, chicken breast, or pike-perch. We recommend a large glass and a drinking temperature of 8-10 degrees Celsius.
Winemaking – Karl May Grauburgunder
The juicy Grauburgunder from Winery Karl May is a dry estate wine from Rheinhessen, from the winegrowing community of Bechtheim, located on the edge of the Wonnegau. There, on sandy loess-loam soil with a south-southeast orientation, the grapes for Karl May's Grauer Burgunder grow in the Heligkreuz vineyard in organically farmed vineyards.
To harvest ripe grapes in autumn, Fritz and Peter May begin as early as January with gentle pruning and early defoliation of the grape zone for optimal sun exposure, as well as yield reduction through green harvesting in early summer. Selective hand-picking of the grapes often takes place in several passes. The path to the new winery is short, where the grapes are gently processed further. The mash is gently pressed, and the must is spontaneously fermented, remains on the lees for a long time, and is aged in stainless steel tanks. A small portion (5%) is aged in used wooden barrels and later blended, which brings complexity, fullness, and creaminess to the estate wine.
