Weinhaus Klumpp Auxerrois – White Wine from Baden

The Klumpp Auxerrois 2025 from Weinhaus Klumpp in Baden is a white wine made from the rather rarely cultivated Auxerrois grape variety, which is all the more popular among friends of Weinhaus Klumpp.

The name of this white grape variety, very similar to Pinot Blanc, indicates that it originates from Auxerre, west of Chablis in Burgundy, from where it came to Germany via Lorraine. Currently, there are only about 180 hectares (0.2%) of this rare grape variety left in all of Germany, which can be considered a specialty of the Kraichgau region.

The golden-yellow grapes are found in a complex fruit experience, clearly characterized by ripe mirabelle plum, yellow quince, and exotic papaya. Fresh as spring, radiant, cheerful, full of sensual charm. The Klumpp Auxerrois wears a wreath of flowers around its neck. Simply a cool wine – as relaxed as it is casual!

Winemaking – Klumpp

The vines of this old, indigenous grape variety grow in two locations that could not be more different. The oldest part of the vines (50 years old) grows in Bruchsal on a very heavy gypsum keuper soil, while the other part is located in Zeutern on a light loess-loam soil.

To harvest ripe Burgundy grapes in autumn, optimal sun exposure is required, so Markus and Andreas Klumpp ensure early double-sided defoliation of the grape zone. Later, yield reduction is carried out by grape division. The selective hand harvesting of the grapes takes place in three passes. In the winery, grapes and mash are not pumped but are moved into the fermentation tanks by gravity. 90% of this white wine ferments slowly (approx. 18 days) under temperature control in stainless steel tanks. 10% ferments in barriques with two months of yeast aging, during which batonnage, i.e., stirring the yeast lees, is practiced for three months. This brings fullness and creaminess to the Auxerrois.
