Betty's Jul Placemat is a woven placemat made from organic Swedish cotton with a Christmas motif on a black background, measuring 35 by 48 centimeters. Not a paper placemat, no film, no shiny decorative item.
Betty's Jul Placemat is a textile placemat from the Ekelund weaving mill, featuring red and white flowers, berries, and snowflakes arranged in a circle around a large red star. Christmas textiles almost always use light backgrounds, such as cream, off-white, or red. Betty's Jul takes a different approach, placing the motif on black. The result feels less like an advent calendar and more like a set dinner table.
Why Black Changes the Motif
On a light background, Christmas red tones appear warm and soft. On black, the same colors appear more saturated and clearer because the contrast increases. The red star in the middle thus stands out as a form, not just a color area.
The circular arrangement enhances this. Flowers, berries, and snowflakes circle the center, giving the set a focal point: it has a center that coincides with the plate on the table. Uniformly patterned sets lack this reference.
Practically, the dark background has a second advantage. Red wine, sauce, and candle soot are hardly visible on black as long as they are fresh. On cream-colored sets, every drop immediately shows.
Anyone planning a classic bright Christmas table will find black too severe. The set makes a statement and does not blend in. It works well in combination with white porcelain, but with cream-colored dinnerware, it creates a clash.
What a Placemat Achieves on the Festive Table
At 35 by 48 centimeters, Betty's Jul accommodates a dinner plate up to 28 centimeters, along with cutlery and glasses. Large charger plates from 32 centimeters almost completely cover the motif, thus losing the effect.
Therefore, it makes sense to either use the set with regular dinnerware or as a base for a place setting without a charger plate. If you are setting the table with charger plates, it's better to opt for a table runner in the same style.
The real benefit lies in acoustics and protection. A textile placemat dampens the clatter of cutlery throughout a long meal and absorbs condensation from wine glasses before it leaves rings on the wood. However, it is not designed for heat: a roaster or casserole dish from the oven needs a trivet, otherwise the bottom will permanently mark the fabric.

Our tip: Dark cotton shows lint more clearly than light. Do not wash black textiles with terry cloth, and turn them inside out before washing. This preserves the color depth for significantly more washes.
From a Swedish Designer, Not from the Archive
Betty's Jul is one of the newer designs in the Ekelund range and bears the first name of its designer. This is an exception in the assortment: most patterns are named after what they depict or after their place of origin.
The weaving mill has been operating in Sweden since 1692, making it one of Europe's oldest continuously producing textile companies. For centuries, it supplied the Swedish royal court. Today, it combines its own motif archive with designs by contemporary Swedish designers, giving the range a spectrum from historical folk art patterns to graphically reduced new designs.
Weaving is done on Jacquard machines, where each warp thread can be lifted individually. This is a prerequisite for a circular motif, as a circle in the fabric must be created from threads laid at right angles. The finer the weave, the softer the curve appears. This is particularly evident with the red star in the middle: its points run diagonally through the fabric.
The yarn used is GOTS-certified organic cotton. For black textiles, dyeing is particularly complex because high color depth requires large amounts of dye and multiple dyeing cycles. The certification precisely covers this step.
For Evenings When Candles Are the Only Light Source
Betty's Jul unfolds its effect in dim light. The black background almost disappears, leaving only the star, berries, and flowers emerging from the darkness. In daylight, the set appears much more graphic.
A set of four or six placemats makes a good gift, as a single placemat rarely brings much joy. For households that regularly host larger gatherings at Christmas, it is a purchase that will last two decades.
It is not suitable for those who prefer natural-toned Christmas textiles or whose dining room is already furnished in dark colors. Black on dark wood loses the effect that the set achieves on light surfaces.
