The Blomsterfält tea towel is a Swedish tea towel made from 100 percent organic cotton with a woven poppy motif, measuring 35 by 50 centimeters. Not a printed towel, not a microfiber towel, not a disposable item.

The Blomsterfält tea towel is a kitchen towel from the Ekelund weaving mill, featuring a poppy motif spread across its entire surface in several shades of red and white with bright orange nuances. Blomsterfält means "flower field," and the motif lives up to its name: there is no frame, no border, and no center, but a continuous surface, as if a section had been cut from a meadow.

Why poppies are difficult in textiles

Poppy blossoms have thin, almost translucent petals with flowing color transitions from orange to deep red. Exactly this cannot be depicted in fabric because a thread has one color and no gradient.

The solution lies in mixing threads. If threads of different red tones are guided in varying densities, from a distance the impression of a transition is created, even though clear color fields remain visible up close. This principle is the same that creates mixed colors from halftone dots in four-color printing.

In practice, this means: the towel appears softer from two meters away than from twenty centimeters. Those expecting a photorealistic flower meadow will find the close-up too coarse. Those who appreciate the textile character will see its charm in this.

The weave itself is medium-dense with a noticeable texture. The towel absorbs water quickly and leaves no fibers on glass.

From polishing glass to drying lettuce

The standard size of 35 by 50 centimeters is designed for dishes. It is not intended for large work surfaces or drying an entire menu service; for that, it's better to choose the 40 by 60 format.

Three applications are particularly worthwhile. First: Washed leaf lettuce can be spin-dried by wrapping it in the towel and swinging the towel by its corners. This works more gently than any spinner because no pressure is applied to the leaves. Second: As a cover for cut cheese in the refrigerator. Cotton allows air to circulate, while cling film suffocates the cheese. Third: For rolling out pasta dough, because the structure offers enough grip so that the dough doesn't move with it.

The motif is also available in larger formats, such as a placemat or a long table runner, allowing the table to be continuously covered.

A side note: Hang kitchen towels spread out after use, not folded. A damp, folded cotton towel will develop an odor within a day, while a spread-out one dries in a few hours. This sounds trivial but is the most common reason why tea towels are replaced prematurely.

Wildflowers as a fundamental Swedish motif

Wildflower motifs have a firm place in Swedish textile tradition, and this has a practical background. In a country where the growing season is short and winter is long, the depiction of blooming meadows indoors had a different function than in Southern Europe: it replaced what was missing outside for months.

Ekelund has been working with this wealth of forms since 1692. The weaving mill is one of the oldest family-run textile businesses worldwide and supplied the Swedish court for centuries. Older floral patterns regularly return from its own archive in new color schemes.

Technically, the motifs are created on Jacquard looms, where each warp thread is controlled individually. This technique dates back to a punch card control from the early 19th century, which is considered a precursor to programmable machines. It is a prerequisite for a flower field without repetition: a simple loom could only produce a repeating pattern.

Organic cotton is processed according to the GOTS standard, which checks not only cultivation but also dyeing processes and working conditions. For a motif that uses four to five shades of red and orange, the number of dyes used is correspondingly high.
