The Höstfröjd towel is a Swedish tea towel made from organic cotton, woven with an autumn motif, measuring 35 by 50 centimeters. Not a microfiber cloth, not a disposable item, not purely seasonal.

The Höstfröjd towel is a kitchen towel from the Ekelund weaving mill, featuring red and yellow blooms, orange rosehips, and leaves in two shades of green. Anyone who cooks in autumn knows the problem: pumpkins, beets, and plums stain everything they touch. A white towel turns gray after two weeks. A towel in autumn colors absorbs these stains without them becoming a problem.

Why dark colors are more practical in the autumn kitchen

The motif uses red, orange, and two shades of green on a muted background. This palette forgives what light towels mercilessly reveal. A splash of red wine or a drop of rosehip purée disappears among the color fields instead of shining as a stain.

The weave is medium-dense. The towel absorbs water quickly, yet remains dimensionally stable and doesn't sag after use. It leaves no fibers on glass, which is not a given with cotton.

However, anyone looking for a towel that absorbs large amounts of water, for example after washing an entire menu, will find Höstfröjd too small. 35 by 50 centimeters is intended for dishes, not for countertops. For the latter, the 40 by 60 format is a more suitable choice.

From drying to wrapping root vegetables

The obvious use is polishing glasses and cutlery. Less obvious are three applications that have proven useful in the autumn kitchen.

First: Wrap harvested carrots, parsnips, and beets, unwashed, in a damp cloth and store them in a cool place. Root vegetables will last for several weeks this way, as they release and reabsorb moisture without molding. Second: Wipe freshly gathered mushrooms with it instead of washing them. The weave structure removes soil without the mushrooms becoming waterlogged. Third: Place it over a bowl of baked fruit that needs to air dry.

A side note: The towel is unsuitable for hot pots. Simply folded cotton conducts heat quickly, and a cast-iron roasting pan rim at 200 degrees will be palpable through two layers. A pot holder is not superfluous.

Why rosehips are a kitchen motif in Sweden

Nypon is the Swedish word for rosehip, and it's not a marginal plant there. Nyponsoppa, a thickened soup made from rosehip purée, is part of the standard repertoire of Swedish kitchens and is eaten both warm and cold, often with slivered almonds and cream.

That the fruit ends up on a kitchen towel is therefore less a decoration than an everyday reference. The Ekelund weaving mill has been operating in Sweden since the late 17th century and draws its motifs from the immediate surroundings: from gardens, forests, and the coastal landscape.
