Gunderloch – Nierstein Riesling – VDP.ERSTE LAGE
The Gunderloch Nierstein Riesling 2022 is an elegant, impressive wine from Gunderloch Winery's top Nierstein vineyards in Rheinhessen.
The Nierstein Riesling is terroir-driven in the best sense. The red slate soils here show a wonderfully unique minerality that is irresistible: warm-spicy with an abundance of exotic fruit notes. Typical of the Nierstein sites, which produce very mineral wines with balancing acidity, is the red berry aroma, which meets yellow stone fruit and lemon zest. A smoky spiciness, reminiscent of wet stone, nut and yeast, culminates in a mouth-watering saltiness.
Dense and self-contained, the Gunderloch Nierstein Riesling is a good accompaniment to white poultry, fruity salads, as well as mussels and light fish dishes.
Gunderloch – Winemaking
Nierstein is a small community in Rheinhessen. It is home to Germany's oldest vineyard, the single vineyard Glöck, first documented in 742. The Nierstein Riesling is a wine from Erste Lagen (first growth sites), specifically from the Nierstein vineyards Pettenthal and Hipping. On the luminous red soils of the Roter Hang, Riesling grapes grow in steep vineyards that capture the sun's rays almost all day long. The rock is heavily weathered, and its finely crumbled structure produces wines with lively elegance and a lighter structure.
The vineyards are managed close to nature, gently cultivated and cared for. Gentle pruning, natural fertilization, yield reduction through grape division and thinning, and selective, manual harvesting in several passes are obligatory here. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wines remain on the fine lees until spring, which gives them stability and good aging potential and supports the development of aromas. The subsequent maturation in 600-liter wooden barrels perfects the characteristic Gunderloch taste: mineral coolness, with crystal-clear fruit and well-integrated acidity.
