Mineral Depth & Terroir Character
The Roter Hang Niersteiner Riesling 1G is terroir-driven in the best sense. The red-shale soils here display a wonderfully unique minerality that is irresistible: warm-spicy with a wealth of exotic fruit notes. Typical of Gunderloch Roter Hang, the 2024 vintage shows a salty minerality with herbal and stony notes. The red clay slate provides spice, paired with a citrus freshness that remains particularly clear and invigorating.
Fruit & Spice in Harmony
Typical of the Nierstein sites, which produce very mineral wines with balancing acidity, is the red berry aroma that meets yellow stone fruit and lemon zest. A smoky spiciness, reminiscent of wet stone, nut, and yeast, culminates in a mouth-watering saltiness. The profile is underscored by green-red apple aromas, hints of melon and peach, plus a touch of tropical nuances. These provide tension and balance – harmonious with the spicy-mineral base.
Perfect Food Pairing & Drinking Moment
With its lean structure and salty freshness, the wine pairs excellently with seafood, white fish, Asian dishes, or simply enjoyed on its own. It is long-lasting, invigorating, and versatile.
The Gunderloch Roter-Hang 2024 Riesling from Nierstein combines stony minerality, green apple and peach notes, salty spice, and lean acidity – an exciting, elegant Riesling.
Gunderloch – Wine Production
Nierstein is a small community in Rheinhessen. It is home to Germany's oldest vineyard, the single vineyard Glöck, first documented in 742. Nierstein Riesling is a wine from Erste Lagen, specifically from the Nierstein sites of Pettenthal and Hipping. In the bright red soils of the Roter Hang, Riesling grapes grow in steep vineyards that capture the sun's rays virtually all day long. The rock is heavily weathered, and its crumbly structure produces wines with lively elegance and a lighter structure.
The vineyards are managed organically, carefully cultivated and maintained. Gentle pruning, natural fertilization, yield reduction through grape splitting and thinning, selective, manual harvesting in several passes are obligatory here. Fermentation takes place at controlled temperatures in stainless steel tanks. The wines remain on the fine lees until spring, which gives them stability and good aging potential and supports the development of aromas. Subsequent aging in 600-liter wooden barrels perfects the characteristic Gunderloch taste: cool mineral, with crystal-clear fruit and well-integrated acidity.
