As if it were a piece of me – Riesling from Weingut Gunderloch
The Als wär’s ein Stück von mir Riesling 2022 from the VDP.Weingut Gunderloch from Nackenheim in Rheinhessen is a dry estate wine. The puristic Riesling "Als wär’s ein Stück von mir" is characterized by its origin in the best sense: the salty minerality of the red clay slate soils is also dominant here. A mature, elegant Riesling with a razor-sharp, cool aroma, showing fine fruit aromas of yellow stone fruit, citrus notes, and red berries. With its dry taste profile, it is an inspiring food companion.
The Gunderloch "Als wär’s ein Stück von mir" Riesling tells a wonderful story of the winery and is an unmistakable ambassador of its origin: the Roter Hang on the Rhine front. "Als wär’s ein Stück von mir" is on the one hand based on Carl Zuckmayer's autobiography Horen der Freundschaft and thus on the tradition of the winery, but on the other hand, it is a statement by the young winemaker Johannes Hasselbach to make a wine as he wants it, to find his own style and thus a sign of the freedom of winemaking.
With the "Als wär’s ein Stück von mir" Riesling, the winemaker succeeds in balancing conscious aspiration and the wildness of an extroverted aroma. Johannes Hasselbach has achieved his goal of creating a wine that strikes a balance between drinking pleasure and ambition.
As if it were a piece of me – Wine Production
The "Als wär’s ein Stück von mir" Riesling is a site cuvée from two exciting sites that Johannes Hasselbach grew to love during his first years of working in the vineyard and cellar. Grapes from a young plot in the Nackenheimer Rothenberg and an approx. 40-year-old plot in the Hipping ensure an exciting interplay between character wine and drinking pleasure.
Both vineyards are cultivated close to nature, carefully processed, and maintained. Gentle pruning, natural fertilization, yield reduction through grape splitting and thinning, selective, manual harvesting in several passes are obligatory here. Fermentation takes place at controlled temperatures in stainless steel tanks. The wines remain on the fine lees until spring, which gives the wines stability and good aging potential and supports the development of aromas. The subsequent aging in 600-liter wooden barrels perfects the characteristic Gunderloch taste: cool mineral, with crystal-clear fruit and vibrating, well-integrated acidity.
