Gunderloch – Rothenberg Riesling GG 2020
The Gunderloch Rothenberg Riesling GG 2020 is a magnificent wine, with a very pure elegance from the Rothenberg, the top site of the VDP.Weingut Gunderloch in Rheinhessen.
The Nackenheimer Rothenberg Riesling is terroir-driven in the best sense. The red slate clay soils here show a wonderful, unique minerality that one cannot escape. Cool and stony, very typical for the Nackenheimer Rothenberg. A crystal-clear Riesling with enormous citrus aromas of citrus fruits such as lemon zest, lime abrasion, mandarin and lemongrass, enveloped in a delicate smokiness. A great wine: very focused, gripping and mineral.
Dense and self-contained, the Gunderloch Nackenheimer Rothenberg Riesling is a good accompaniment to light poultry, crisp leafy salads and light fish dishes. As a Riesling lover, you should give this jewel 5-10 years to develop.
Nackenheim Rothenberg – Wine Production
The Nackenheimer Rothenberg is one of the top sites in Rheinhessen. Almost the entire site is cultivated by the Hasselbach family, whose winery directly borders the vineyard. On the red shimmering soils of the Roter Hang, massive red slate clay with a very thin weathered soil layer predominates. Here, Riesling grapes grow in vineyards that capture the sun's rays almost all day, because the Roter Hang, with a 50-75% slope, is one of the steepest sites on the Rhine front. The Rothenberg is part of the Roter Hang, as are Hipping and Pettenthal. The Riesling grapes for this Große Gewächs come from the 20 best rows of vines in this top site. The wines from Rothenberg, the northernmost part of the Roter Hang, are puristic and austere, cool with exceptional mineral length and very high development potential!
The vineyards are cultivated close to nature, gently worked and maintained. Gentle pruning, natural fertilization, yield reduction through grape splitting and thinning, selective, manual harvesting in several passes are obligatory here. Fermentation takes place spontaneously in large, used wooden barrels. The wines remain on the fine lees until well into spring, which gives the wines stability and good aging potential and supports the development of aromas. The subsequent maturation in 600-liter wooden barrels perfects the characteristic Gunderloch taste: minerally cool, with crystal-clear fruit and vibrant, well-integrated acidity.
