Gunderloch Sauvignon Blanc vom Stein - Fruity Organic Estate Wine from Rheinhessen
The Gunderloch Sauvignon Blanc vom Stein 2024 is an aromatic, wonderfully dry estate wine from VDP.Weingut Gunderloch from Nackenheim in Rheinhessen.
The Sauvignon Blanc von Stein is origin-driven in the best sense. The Rotliegend clay slate soils here show a wonderful, unique minerality that is irresistible. On the nose, spicy, fruity, with notes of gooseberry, blackcurrant, and pear, with delicate acidity and wonderful finesse. Fine-spicy varietal aroma of green fruits and tart herbs meets crisp acidity on the palate. This easy-drinking estate wine, which, in addition to its unique minerality, also displays an animating fragrance, is a good accompaniment to fish dishes, white meat, and vegetables like asparagus.
Gutswein vom Stein – Winemaking
The Sauvignon Blanc grapes for this organic wine come from a spur of the Roter Hang, characterized by red clay slate in the subsoil and weathered limestone soils. Here, the Sauvignon Blanc finds optimal conditions. The vineyards are cultivated naturally, gently worked, and cared for. Gentle pruning, natural fertilization, yield reduction through cluster splitting and thinning, selective, manual harvesting in several passes are obligatory here. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wines remain on the fine lees until spring, which gives the wines stability and good aging potential and supports aroma development. Subsequent aging in 600-liter wooden barrels perfects the characteristic Gunderloch taste: cool and mineral, with crystal-clear fruit and vibrating, well-integrated acidity.
Weingut Gunderloch was founded in 1890 by banker Carl Gunderloch and managed by Fritz Hasselbach until 2015. After the sudden death of his father, Johannes Hasselbach took over responsibility for the family business. He belongs to the younger generation of winemakers who want to know "more," question things, and try new approaches. This led to the Wurzelwerk winemaking project, created together with Maximilian von Kunow and Alwin Jurtschitsch.
Johannes Hasselbach continues the philosophy of his parents and grandparents: the wine is made in the vineyard. As a winemaker, one can accompany the process of wine creation but should influence it as little as possible. Because the wines should be unmistakable ambassadors of the soil on which they grow and taste accordingly. The terroir varietal Riesling therefore plays the main role at Weingut Gunderloch; approximately 85% of the 24 ha of vineyards are planted with this grape variety, but Burgundian varieties and Sauvignon Blanc also thrive on the Roter Hang on the Rhine front, characterized by red slate.
