Gunderloch Grauburgunder vom Löss – Estate Wine from Rheinhessen
The Gunderloch Grauburgunder vom Löss 2024 is a dry estate wine from VDP.Weingut Gunderloch from Nackenheim in Rheinhessen.
The organic Pinot Gris from loess is origin-driven in the best sense. The Rotliegend clay slate soils show a wonderful inherent minerality here that one cannot resist: warm-spicy with an abundance of yellow fruit notes. Harmonious, juicy Burgundy fruit with delicate acidity and wonderful finesse. The enjoyable estate wine, which, in addition to its unique minerality, also exhibits a spicy freshness underlined by ripe pome fruit, is an inspiring food companion with its very balanced taste profile.
Estate Wine from Loess – Wine Preparation
The Burgundy grapes for this estate wine come from a parcel of the Red Slope, near a break-off edge towards the Rhine, which is characterized by clay slate in the subsoil and an aeolian loess layer. Here, Pinot Gris finds optimal conditions. The vineyards are managed close to nature, gently cultivated and cared for. Gentle pruning, natural fertilization, yield reduction through grape splitting and thinning, selective, manual harvesting in several passes are obligatory here. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wines remain on the fine lees until spring, which gives the wines stability and good aging potential and supports the development of aromas. The subsequent aging in 600-liter wooden barrels perfects the characteristic Gunderloch taste: coolly mineral, with crystal-clear fruit and vibrant, well-integrated acidity.
Weingut Gunderloch was founded in 1890 by the banker Carl Gunderloch and managed by Fritz Hasselbach until 2015. After the sudden death of his father, Johannes Hasselbach took over responsibility for the family business. He belongs to the young generation of winemakers who want to know "more," question things, and try new approaches. This led to the Wurzelwerk winemaking project, founded with Maximilian von Kunow and Alwin Jurtschitsch.
Johannes Hasselbach continues the philosophy of his parents and grandparents: the wine is made in the vineyard. As a winemaker, one can accompany the process of wine creation but should influence it as little as possible. This is because the wines should be unmistakable ambassadors of the soil on which they grow and taste exactly like it. The terroir variety Riesling therefore plays the main role at Weingut Gunderloch; approximately 85% of the 24 hectares of vineyards are planted with this grape variety, but Burgundy varieties also thrive on the Red Slope, characterized by red slate, along the Rhine front.
