Gunderloch Jean Baptiste Riesling Kabinett 2024 captivates with subtle sweetness, lively acidity, and aromatic clarity – a stylish off-dry Riesling from Rheinhessen.
- Freshness and elegance – delicate green apple and peach notes, underpinned by wet stone minerality
- Harmonious sweet-acid balance – approximately 22 g residual sugar, yet pure and clear due to lively acidity
- Terroir from three Grand Cru sites – grapes from Rothenberg, Pettenthal & Hipping for breadth & depth
Fruity-Mineral interplay of aromas
The off-dry Riesling Kabinett is characteristically shaped by its origin in the best sense. The red slate soils here display a wonderful, characteristic minerality that is irresistible: warm-spicy with an abundance of exotic fruit notes. Harmonious, juicy Riesling fruit with delicate acidity and wonderful finesse. The 2024 vintage shows a multifaceted bouquet of green apple, yellow peach, ripe apricot, and delicate citrus notes. On the palate, the fruity sweetness combines with a delicate minerality reminiscent of wet pebbles – clear and precise on the finish.
Winery & Origin
Weingut Gunderloch in Nackenheim is one of the renowned producers on the Rhine Terrace, cultivating 14 hectares of vineyards and a member of the VDP. The Jean Baptiste comes from grapes from the renowned Grand Cru terraces: Nackenheimer Rothenberg, Niersteiner Pettenthal, and Hipping – this diversity gives the wine both style and strength of origin. On the glowing red soils of the Roter Hang, the Riesling grapes grow in steep vineyards that flatten and open up towards the Rhine. The vineyards are cultivated close to nature, gently tended, and maintained. Gentle pruning, natural fertilization, yield reduction through grape division and thinning, and selective, manual harvesting in several passes are obligatory here. Fermentation takes place at controlled temperatures in stainless steel tanks. The wines remain on the fine lees until spring, which imparts stability and good aging potential to the wines and supports the development of aromas. The subsequent aging in 600-liter wooden barrels perfects the characteristic Gunderloch taste: cool mineral, with crystal-clear fruit and vibrant, well-integrated acidity.
Serving Recommendation & Drinking Moment
The extremely enjoyable Jean Baptiste, which, in addition to its unique minerality, also displays delicate fruit aromas of vineyard peach, juicy apricot, and green apple, pairs perfectly with spicy, slightly hot dishes and Asian cuisine. With the lightness of a Kabinett and its associated moderate alcohol content, it is also a successful accompaniment to summer dishes, ideal with light fish or vegetable dishes, or solo as an animating aperitif. Thanks to its lively acidity and subtle sweetness, it is perfect for relaxed moments of enjoyment, even for two.
