Questions about Blaufränkisch – Deutsch Schützen – 2018?

We are happy to help you with Weingut Wachter Wiesler.

Wachter-Wiesler – Blaufränkisch Deutsch Schützen

The Wachter-Wiesler Blaufränkisch Deutsch Schützen 2018 is an organic red wine made from Blaufränkisch grapes from Southern Burgenland in Austria. This village-level red wine impressively showcases its unique terroir: Deutsch Schützen. Around the Deutsch Schützener Berg, with its iron-rich soils, a diverse array of rock formations and soil compositions can be found in a very small area: oxidized green slate, quartz phyllite, calcareous slate, and serpentinite. This red wine from the region, which was only declared a DAC for typical origin wines in 2010, is distinctive, mineral-spicy, dense and powerful, with cool vibrancy and a fine tannin structure. The Deutsch Schützen appears more powerful, robust, and denser than its village-level counterpart from Eisenberg.

On the nose, the garnet-red Blaufränkisch Deutsch Schützen exudes dark berry fruits, cassis, juicy cherries, which meet a piquant herbal spice and graphite, with earthy-mineral spice and black pepper adding to the complexity. On the palate, the Village wine is juicy with elegance and cool finesse, vibratingly delicate yet firmly structured, with a salty finish. The Wachter-Wiesler Deutsch Schützen Eisenberg DAC Reserve is a price-pleasure experience at the highest Blaufränkisch level.

Blaufränkisch – Winemaking

The Blaufränkisch grapes, hand-picked late in mid to late October 2018, come from 35-40 year old vines growing on heavy, iron-rich loam soils with gravel and sand in the Weinberg, Ratschen, and Bründlgfangen vineyards of the Deutsch Schützen municipality in the Eisenberg DAC in Southern Burgenland. The vineyards are sun-drenched, stony and rather flat, and, in addition to the special soils, are characterized by the Pannonian-Illyrian climate. Christoph Wachter cultivates the vineyards of the Wachter Wiesler winery organically-biologically with a great deal of manual work and care. After harvesting, the grapes remain on the mash for 21 days, partly in wooden fermentation vats, partly in steel, fermenting spontaneously with natural vineyard yeasts, and are then gently pressed. Afterwards, they undergo malolactic fermentation and mature for 24 months in traditional, large wooden barrels (1500l). Unfined and unfiltered, bottled in summer 2020.
