Tea towels

There's that little, quiet joy: a freshly rinsed red wine glass, polished with a linen blend cloth, and then, against all odds, it actually stays streak-free. No shine spray, no struggle, no "almost perfect." Just clear. That's the work of a good tea towel — quiet and reliable.

Cheap cotton cloths shed lint, absorb little, and leave streaks. A woven linen blend can do none of that. It dries glasses clearer than any microfiber type, absorbs moisture better, and — with proper care — lasts thirty years.

Two European Weavers

Ekelund Master Weavers has been weaving in the southern Swedish town of Horred since 1692, originally for the Swedish royal family. Their jacquard tea towels in linen blend — a mix of linen and cotton — are classic: clear patterns, warm colors, very robust.

Le Jacquard Français from the Vosges produces damask tea towels, like those found in the kitchens of good Parisian restaurants. More finely woven, a little heavier, with patterns that have remained the same for generations.

How to recognize a good cloth

• Linen blend instead of cotton — linen content provides absorbency and smoothness.
• Woven patterns instead of prints — withstand decades of washing.
• Firm edge — the edges should not fray, not even after five years.
• At least 50 × 70 cm — only then can a wine glass fit completely inside.

The most important care tip: Wash linen blend at 60°C with heavy-duty detergent. Never use fabric softener — it coats the fibers, destroys absorbency, and turns a lifelong tool into an ordinary cloth. That's the only difference between a cloth that lasts five years and one that lasts twenty-five.
