Easter Gift Towel. A kitchen towel for the days around Easter.
The Easter Gift Towel is a Swedish tea towel made from organic cotton with a woven Easter motif, measuring 35 by 50 centimetres. Not a decorative hanging item, not terry cloth, not a paper product.
The Easter Gift Towel is a kitchen towel from the Ekelund weaving mill, featuring painted Easter eggs, bows, and small white bunnies. Easter brings with it a tangible kitchen problem: egg dye. It gets on your fingers, on the worktop, and by the time you dry things, on the towel. A towel in strong colours handles this better than white linen, which ends up speckled pink after just one afternoon.
Why colourful towels are more practical in spring
Food dyes from beetroot juice, turmeric, or onion skins reliably stain cotton, and permanently so. On a patterned background, such a stain disappears between the colour fields. On white, it remains visible.
The weave is medium-dense and slightly textured. The towel absorbs water quickly and dries overnight in normally heated rooms, which is rarely achieved with thicker terry alternatives.
It is not suitable as a substitute for a hand towel by the sink. 35 by 50 centimetres and a smooth cotton weave are designed for dishes, not wet hands. Anyone who wants to do both with the same towel will find the absorbency too low.
Eggs, dough, and other things that come up
Four uses have proven effective in the Easter kitchen, and none of them is pure drying.
Firstly: let dyed eggs drip dry on it after cooling, instead of on kitchen paper. The texture absorbs water without the shell sticking. Secondly: wrap a braided yeast bread in it while it is still warm after baking. The crust stays softer because the residual moisture doesn't escape abruptly. Thirdly: as a base for the Easter basket, where the fabric catches crumbs and chocolate remnants. Fourthly: placed over a bowl of cut fruit that should not dry out.
The motif is also available as a table runner for the centre of the table. If you prefer chicken motifs, you'll find them on the Fjäderblom towel with a rooster and daffodils.
Good to know: Egg dye is easiest to remove from cotton if the stain is still wet. Use cold water, not warm, because heat coagulates the protein in the dye and sets the stain. Then wash normally at 60 degrees.
A motif between two Easter traditions
In Sweden, chicks bring the eggs, not bunnies. Children dress up as Påskkärring (Easter witches) and go from door to door, with headscarves and painted freckles, exchanging handmade Easter letters for sweets. The rabbit plays no role in this tradition.
The fact that Ekelund weaves it anyway has to do with export markets. The weaving mill has been operating in Sweden since 1692 and now supplies much of Europe, where the rabbit is the dominant Easter symbol. Easter Gift is therefore a motif that combines two traditions without denying either of them.
Technically, the pattern is created on Jacquard looms, where each warp thread is individually controlled. This process allows multiple colours to be used in one area without loose threads floating on the back. An Easter motif with six or seven colours is therefore technically much more demanding to weave than a two-colour check.
The yarn is organic cotton with GOTS certification. The standard includes dyeing, which is important for multi-coloured motifs: the more colours, the more dyes undergo testing.
A towel that can stay up even after Easter
Unlike a table runner, a kitchen towel doesn't immediately disappear into the cupboard when the season is over. The colours of Easter Gift are spring-like, but not exclusively Easter-themed, which means it can stay on the hook until early summer.
As a small gift, it's better than sweets because it lasts. Wrapped around a jar of honey or a bar of chocolate, the packaging becomes a second gift. For families with small children, the motif has an added appeal because the hidden bunnies can be searched for.
Anyone with a minimalist kitchen who generally avoids patterned textiles would be better served by plain towels. Easter Gift is distinctly pictorial and stands out in a minimalist environment.
