The Easter Gift table runner is a 35 by 120 centimetre table runner made of Swedish organic cotton with a woven Easter motif. Not a tablecloth, not oilcloth, not disposable paper decoration.

The Easter Gift table runner is a textile table runner from the Ekelund weaving mill, featuring variously coloured painted Easter eggs with ribbons, and small white bunnies hiding behind them. Easter decorations have a bad reputation, and rightly so: most demand is met with printed paper, plastic eggs, and felt bunnies that end up in a box after two weeks. A woven runner goes against this logic. It is not a consumable item.

An Easter motif that is not kitschy

The eggs are drawn flat, the bunnies are small and restrained. The motif uses clear colour fields instead of shading, as this corresponds to the weaving technique. What is a drawing in the template becomes a surface in the weave.

This reduction is why the runner appears sophisticated. Printed Easter textiles usually rely on pastels with gradients, which quickly looks like a child's room. Here, strong colours stand side by side, separated by the white of the bunnies.

Those who expect a fluffy surface or a glossy finish will find the fabric too plain. Ekelund textiles feel like what they are: tightly woven cotton with a visible weave. This plainness is intentional and not due to cost-cutting.

Another point about colour: woven patterns do not fade. There is no applied layer that could peel off, because the colour is in the thread. A runner that has seen ten Easters will still look similar to its first year.

Where a runner belongs and where it doesn't

At 120 centimetres long, Easter Gift covers the middle of a table for four to six people, leaving wood visible at both ends. For longer tables, it looks lost; there, the 140 cm length is the better choice.

The classic placement is the middle of the table; placed crosswise, a second option arises: for a square table for four, the runner then lies as a band between two seats. It also works on a dresser or sideboard, as its 35 centimetre width covers most furniture depths.

A runner is not suitable as a trivet for hot serving dishes. Cotton conducts heat, and a roasting pan straight from the oven will burn through the fabric into the tabletop. For Easter lamb and casseroles, an additional trivet is needed.

If you want to fully set the table, combine the runner with the tea towel in the same motif or with placemats with a chicken coop motif.

Our tip: Do not place the runner on a freshly oiled wooden surface. Oil absorbs into cotton and leaves dark stains that cannot be washed out. After oiling, allow two weeks to cure, then the surface is stable.

Why chickens are more important than bunnies in Sweden

The Easter Bunny is a German invention of the 17th century that only spread to the North late. In Sweden, traditionally, the Easter chick brings the eggs, and the dominant motifs are chickens, chicks, and feathers. The appearance of bunnies on Easter Gift is therefore a concession to the European market and not a Swedish tradition.

The Ekelund weaving mill has existed since 1692, making it older than the Kingdom of Sweden in its current borders. For centuries, it supplied the court; today, it operates as a family business with its own designers and an archive of motifs that includes several thousand patterns.

Weaving is done on Jacquard machines. Their special feature is that each warp thread can be lifted individually, allowing for free motifs instead of repeat patterns. Round shapes like Easter eggs are texturally challenging because a circle in the weave must be composed of horizontal and vertical rows of threads. The finer the weave, the less visible this stepping becomes.

The yarn used is GOTS-certified organic cotton. The standard examines not only cultivation but also dyeing, finishing, and social standards along the chain. With colourful Easter motifs with many colours, the number of dyes used is correspondingly high, which makes certification more relevant than for solid-coloured goods.
