The Chardonnay Schweigen 2020 from Weingut Friedrich Becker is a VDP.ORTSWEIN from Schweigen in the Palatinate. Chardonnay is a prima donna that places high demands on the quality of its soils. Friedrich Becker's goal is to combine the varietal-typical, lively acidity of the grape with the physiological ripeness of the harvested grapes. This results in a combination of breed and elegance.
Light, bright yellow with greenish reflections in the glass. The nose offers a delicate aroma of yellow fruits such as melon and pear, butter and nuts, as well as ethereal herbal notes. On the palate, it is juicy with a creamy texture, subtly smoky and elegant with perfectly integrated barrique notes and a long-lasting finish. The expressive Chardonnay Schweigen is already convincing in its youth but still shows very good aging potential.
It has long been known that Weingut Friedrich Becker's Pinot Noirs belong to Germany's red elite, but their white wines are catching up. Chardonnay is one of young Fritz Becker's favorite grape varieties. He cultivates it in a purist and cool style, with the fruit remaining in the background, the minerality bringing depth and substance and the ability to ripen perfectly.
How Friedrich Becker Wine is Made
The Chardonnay grapes for this estate wine grew in vineyards around Schweigen in the Palatinate, on both German and Alsatian sides, on weathered limestone soil with a loamy-clay top layer. The age of the vines is between 21 and 29 years. The grapes were carefully hand-selected, destemmed, and gently pressed. The controlled fermentation and further aging took place in 228-liter oak barrels made of the finest French and Palatinate oak. The proportion of new barrels was 40%. After extensive aging on the lees, the wine was bottled in June 2022.
