Sauvignon Blanc from Weingut Weedenborn in a Magnum Bottle
The Weedenborn Sauvignon Blanc Magnum 2023 from Gesine Roll of Weingut Weedenborn impresses with its delicate aroma, so typical of Sauvignon Blanc: gooseberry, elderflower, a hint of grapefruit. On the palate, tropical fruits, passion fruit, and papaya conquer the tongue and palate. The wine is characteristic, possesses minerality, but also smoothness.
This Weedenborn Sauvignon Blanc in the magnum bottle grew on calcareous marl and loess-loam soil, which gives it its unmistakable mineral character. Uncomplicated but not insignificant, the Sauvignon estate wine from Weingut Weedenborn. Here too, the winemaker pays attention to the ripeness of the grapes, because her Sauvignon should not taste green from unripe grapes.
Sauvignon Blanc virtually demands consistent work from the winemaker in the vineyard and cellar, even more so than other grape varieties. After hand harvesting, the grapes were processed with dry ice to protect the must from oxidation. This is important to Gesine Roll of Weingut Weedenborn for Sauvignon Blanc, as the typical Sauvignon Blanc aromas are highly volatile – meaning they are quickly lost – upon contact with oxygen.
Gesine Roll – Passion in Large Bottles
Gesine's great love is Sauvignon Blanc. Perhaps she discovered this during her international internship at the South African winery Vergelegen, which she completed during her winemaking apprenticeship. As one of the first, Gesine planted Sauvignon Blanc vines, a grape variety only "permitted" in Rheinhessen since 2001. In 2013, Gesine Roll won the Sauvignon Blanc Trophy. That Sauvignon Blanc can also age is particularly evident in large bottles, as here with the magnum bottle. It makes a valuable gift for anyone with something to celebrate.
