Steitz Riesling Porphyr 2023 – Pure Origin on Volcanic Rock

Steitz Riesling Porphyr 2023 represents a new path for the winery – characterized by origin, craftsmanship, and a clear signature: cool, mineral, strong in character. What used to be a village wine is now a true terroir statement. With the arrival of son Finn Steitz, not only has the vinification changed, but also the self-perception of this wine. The Riesling grows around Neu-Bamberg on volcanic porphyry rock, is spontaneously fermented and minimally sulfured – vinified in an unadulterated way and with great sensitivity for its origin. The new, reduced label also reflects this change: puristic, edgy, clear.

Steitz Origin Wine – Advantages at a Glance:

  • Terroir-driven & mineral – the typical taste of porphyry soil: smoky, salty, cool.
  • New signature with even more origin – more craftsmanship, more origin, more character.
  • Spontaneously fermented & natural – for authentic, clear drinkability with depth.
  • More Origin, More Craftsmanship

With Finn Steitz, a breath of fresh air has entered the winery – and it's palpable. The former village wine has been consistently developed further. Instead of a classic style, the focus is now on the terroir. Together with father Christian, Finn brings artisanal finesse and an uncompromising orientation towards origin into play. The Riesling grapes for this origin wine come from one of the coolest and rockiest sites in Rheinhessen, from young vines grown on the west side of the Heerkretz site, characterized by volcanic porphyry. Christian Steitz wholeheartedly believes in regenerative agriculture for a natural balance of the soils, which includes: species-rich cover cropping and rolling, applying compost teas, gentle pruning, manual defoliation, hand harvesting. After several hours of maceration, gently pressed. The winemaking process: unbridled spontaneous fermentation with full lees, reduced intervention, aging on full lees in Hösch-Stückfass until May, bottled in September 2024 without additives or fining – all geared towards maximum expression of the soil and the site. This creates a Riesling that doesn't aim to please, but precisely and edgily shows what makes it unique.

Volcanic Rock as a Flavor Carrier

The porphyry soil is the foundation of this wine. From the volcanic rock, the Riesling draws its clear minerality, the salty-smoky depth, and the cool tension on the palate. The vines stand on old, stony sites that yield little water but much character. You can taste this special origin in every sip: not a bland Riesling, but a true statement from the soil to the bottle.

Fruit, Structure, and Style in Perfect Balance

Despite its striking minerality, the Steitz Riesling Porphyr 2023 convinces with harmonious fruit – peach, yellow apple, a hint of citrus, and herbal freshness. The wine appears clear, lean, and precise, with a fine play of acidity and a long finish. Not a loud wine, but one with poise and substance, revealing more of itself with each subsequent sip. Those who love cool, terroir-driven Rieslings will find what they're looking for here.

The Steitz Riesling Porphyr 2023 is a cool, mineral origin wine from porphyry rock with a new signature. Cool, salty, fruit-precise – a wine that speaks of its origin.

Steitz Riesling Porphyr 2023 – Terroir, Minerality, Character – clear Riesling from porphyry rock, spontaneously fermented, mineral-cool with dark-spicy fruit. Origin & Craftsmanship to the point.
