Baikal Wind Deflector. Wind protection, adjustable grill height, and skewer holder in one part.
The Baikal wind deflector is a stainless steel attachment for the Thüros Baikal, which protects the embers from wind and simultaneously allows for adjustable grill height. Not a lid, not a hood, not a substitute for a closed grill.
The Baikal wind deflector is the most purchased accessory for the Thüros grill and is exclusively suitable for the Baikal shashlik grill. An outdoor skewer grill has a problem that is only understood on the second attempt: Wind blowing in from the sides dissipates the heat before it reaches the meat. The deflector stands on three sides around the charcoal tray, blocking direct access for the wind. The Baikal is designed for skewers, and the wind deflector directly accommodates them.
Three functions in one deflector
The wind deflector is not just a windbreak, even if the name suggests it. It performs three functions simultaneously.
First, it keeps drafts away from the embers, so the charcoal burns evenly instead of cooling down on one side. Second, it supports the grill grate and makes the height adjustable: The grate can be hung at several levels, closer to the embers for steaks, further away for vegetables. Third, it holds grill skewers and serves as a holder for the warming rack.
Tool-free assembly
The deflector is placed on the grill head; nothing more is needed. It stays in place due to its own weight and shape; there are no screws or clamps.
This is an advantage for a part that is removed and cleaned after each grilling session. It can be laid flat for storage. If you store the grill over the winter, this saves noticeable space.
V2A stainless steel, like the entire grill
The deflector is made of non-magnetic V2A stainless steel, the same material as the grill itself. This is not a minor aspect for a component that sits directly over the embers and gets wet regularly: It does not rust, does not permanently deform when heated, and can be cleaned with a sponge.
There is one limitation you should be aware of: stainless steel discolors over embers. After the first season, the deflector will show tarnishing in gold and blue. This is normal, has no impact on function, and cannot be prevented.
Why it's worthwhile for the Baikal
Those who use the Baikal primarily for skewers get both with the deflector: wind protection and a support that keeps the skewers at an even distance. For indirect grilling and smoking, the deflector alone is not suitable because it remains open at the top. For that, you also need the barbecue hood.
The part that turns a good grill into a reliable one.
