Cantina Tramin Lagrein - Red Wine from South Tyrol

The Cantina Tramin Lagrein 2024 is a dry, dark-berried red wine from South Tyrol. Lagrein is an old autochthonous grape variety that captivates with its dark ruby to garnet red color. The wine smells of violets, blackberries, and a hint of cherry, accompanied by earthy tones. The Cantina Tramin Lagrein has a pleasant fullness and shows raspberry, dark red cherry, bittersweet chocolate, black licorice, and spices on the palate in a tannic structure with a long-lasting finish. This high-quality Lagrein wonderfully complements hearty Tyrolean dishes, especially game dishes and dark meat, and can also be enjoyed with aged mountain cheeses.

Cantina Tramin – Winemaking

The mild winter of the 2024 vintage with sufficient rainfall, as well as a warm March also blessed with rain, led to an early budding of the vines. Afterwards, it was rather cool and damp until the end of June, apart from a few early summer days in April. The summer was warm with many hours of sunshine, and a rainy autumn extended the vegetation period of the grapes. Overall, 2024 was a challenging wine year, requiring many extra hours of work in the vineyard. Thanks to a consistent implementation of the quality philosophy, the experience of the winemakers, and the cooperation within the cooperative, the Cantina Tramin was able to harvest grape material of remarkable quality, especially for the white grape varieties and Pinot Noir. Thus, the white wines of the 2024 vintage are delicate and fresh, while among the reds, the elegance of the Pinot Noir stands out.

The vines for this South Tyrolean red wine grow on calcareous and gravelly clay soils on hillsides between 250 and 400 m above sea level. The grapes were harvested at optimal physiological ripeness and brought in small containers to the winery building, where they were destemmed before the mash fermented in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures (28 – 30°C) and in concrete vats. The subsequent malolactic fermentation and at least 6 months of aging take place partly in wooden barrels and partly in concrete vats.
