Cantina Tramin – Merlot – Red wine from South Tyrol

The Cantina Tramin Merlot 2023 is a dry, elegant red wine from South Tyrol. The Merlot grape variety originally comes from France and is a slightly tart red wine of garnet red to dark garnet red color. The red wine has aromas of red berries, grass, and wild vine. The Cantina Tramin Merlot has a pleasant fullness and shows red and black currants, Amarena cherry, and a vegetal tartness on the palate, in a soft tannin structure with a long-lasting finish. This wonderful Merlot accompanies hearty Tyrolean dishes, especially game and wild fowl, and also stands up to matured mountain cheeses.

Cantina Tramin – Winemaking

A mild, low-rainfall winter with plenty of sunshine was followed in the 2023 wine year by a dry March with a comparatively early budding. Although spring was rather cool and rainy, June saw a mix of hot sunny days and precipitation. A hot summer and a rainy start to September demanded a lot of work from the winemakers. Fortunately, the weather gods granted South Tyrol a golden autumn with ideal conditions for the grape harvest. Thanks to targeted work in the vineyard, as well as the experience and care of the cooperative members of the Cantina Tramin, the numerous challenges of the 2023 vintage were mastered brilliantly. The white wines of the 2023 vintage are cool and delicate and impress with juicy freshness and crispness. The red wines are characterized by elegance and finesse.

The vines for this Cantina Tramin Cuvée grow on calcareous and gravelly clay soils on hillsides between 250 and 400 m above sea level. The grapes were harvested at the time of their optimal physiological ripeness and brought in small containers to the winery building, where they were destemmed before the mash fermented in steel tanks at a controlled temperature (28°C) and in concrete vats. The subsequent malolactic fermentation and the minimum 6-month aging take place partly in wooden barrels and partly in concrete vats.
