Cantina Tramin Merlot – Südtirol DOC

The Cantina Tramin Merlot 2022 is a dry, elegant red wine from South Tyrol. The Merlot grape variety originates from France and is a slightly tart red wine with a garnet to dark garnet color. The red wine has aromas of red berries, grass, and wild vine. The Cantina Tramin Merlot has a pleasant fullness and shows red and black currants, Amarena cherry, and a vegetal tartness on the palate in a soft tannin structure with a persistent finish. This wonderful Merlot accompanies hearty Tyrolean dishes, especially game dishes and wild fowl, and also pairs well with aged mountain cheeses.

Cantina Tramin – Winemaking

The 2022 vintage began with above-average temperatures in spring, which favored early budding. The sustained warm temperatures in May led to rapid flowering. Thanks to targeted work in the vineyard and occasional rain, the vines could be kept in a stress-free state despite summer phases with extreme heat. The grape harvest began almost two weeks earlier than usual. Because the weather played along perfectly, grapes of outstanding quality could be harvested throughout the entire harvest period. The white wines of the 2022 vintage show a distinct, refined fruit with balanced acidity. The red wines of the 2022 vintage, like this Merlot Südtirol DOC, are impressive; they benefit from a high degree of ripeness and develop complex fruit and a full flavor with powerful aromas.

The vines for this South Tyrolean red wine grow on calcareous and gravelly clay soils on hillsides between 250 to 400 m above sea level. The grapes were harvested at the time of optimal physiological ripeness and brought in small containers to the winery building, where they were destemmed before the mash fermented in steel tanks at a controlled temperature (28°C) and in concrete vats. The subsequent malolactic fermentation and at least 6 months of aging take place partly in wooden barrels and partly in concrete vats.
