Salzberg 2017 - The Top Red Wine from Weingut Gernot Heinrich

The Gernot Heinrich Salzberg 2017 is the winery's signature red wine cuvée, consisting of equal parts Blaufränkisch and Merlot, showcasing a majestic grandeur. The grapes originate from one of the oldest and best Gols slopes called Salzberg, which is southwest-facing and characterized by glacial, red terrace gravel and sandy-loamy sedimentary soils. Both grape varieties in this top-class red wine cuvée, which has excellent aging potential, create a harmony of power and silkiness, crisp acidity and delicate tannin, cool elegance and richness. The current 2017 vintage once again causes a stir among lovers of Austrian red wines.

On the nose, pitch-black blackberry jelly blends with dark spiciness, a hint of graphite and pine needles waft through. On the palate, the Salzberg from Weingut Heinrich reveals its impressive structure, firm, finely-structured tannins, and at the same time a silky texture and a pleasant coolness. The Salzberg is powerful, meaty, substantial: a wine that can accompany braised, dark meat in rich sauces on equal terms.

Gernot Heinrich – Winemaking

The Blaufränkisch and Merlot grapes, harvested by hand from mid-September to early October 2017, grow in the legendary Golser Salzberg vineyard, managed biodynamically by Heike and Gernot Heinrich with great manual effort and care. After the harvest, the grapes remain on the mash in wooden fermentation vats for three weeks, ferment spontaneously, and are then gently pressed in a basket press and undergo spontaneous fermentation. The Salzberg matured for 29 months in used 500-liter oak barrels before being bottled unfiltered in April 2020.
