Viognier 2023 – a Palatinate white wine from Oliver Zeter

The Oliver Zeter Viognier 2023 is an opulent, creamy wine, enormously rich in taste with floral notes of mirabelle plum, nutmeg, roses and roasted almonds, showing a lot of fruit sweetness and roasted notes.

The grapes from Oliver Zeter's best vineyards are hand-sorted, spontaneously fermented without must clarification, and exclusively aged in 300 and 500-liter wooden barrels. After a long aging on the lees until summer, the wines are bottled unfined before autumn. The complexity of these wines is the focus here, framed by the fine expression of the wooden barrel. Viognier – the underrated from the Rhône

Viognier is an old grape variety that originates from the Rhône and is rarely grown in Germany due to climatic conditions. Three vineyards in the localities of Edenkoben, Diedesfeld and Hambach are planted with this variety as an experimental cultivation. The training is done as a cordon, which results in a linear and thus easier to handle grape zone. Nevertheless, the cultivation of this variety is very labor-intensive in our latitudes due to its enormous fertility. The vineyards are permanently greened, partly by natural herbs and partly by targeted seeding.

The harvest took place as late as the weather and the health of the grapes allowed. The grapes were harvested in small, 20-kilogram crates. Afterwards, the grapes were crushed and pressed. The juice was immediately placed in used French oak barriques – where the must was then spontaneously fermented. In spring, partial malolactic fermentation occurred, and the wine lay on its fine lees until summer, which was stirred regularly (battonage).
