Weingut Rings – Grauburgunder 2023 – [ORGANIC] [VDP]

The Rings Grauburgunder 2023 from Weingut Rings is a dry VDP.Gutswein made from grapes from Freinsheim and Kallstadt vineyards. These vineyards are cultivated naturally by Andreas and Steffen Rings. The skillful use of oak gives the Rings Grauburgunder spice and power and supports its varietal aromas of ripe pear, white blossoms, and local walnuts. On the palate, it is pleasantly elegant, powerfully nutty with structure and a delicate richness.

Rings – Winemaking

Brothers Andreas and Steffen Rings place great emphasis on healthy soils, vines, and grapes in organic viticulture. They start early by sowing buckwheat, clover, and radish, which prevents soil erosion, attracts beneficial insects, and retains moisture in the soil, which is revitalized with the application of horse manure as a natural fertilizer. Canopy management is also important for wine quality: double shoots are removed manually, and depending on the weather conditions, the grapes are defoliated and thinned to aerate them. The grapes are hand-picked and selected at the optimal harvest time, and some are gently pressed as whole clusters. After a short maceration period, approximately 10% of the wine was allowed to ferment on the skins, which gives this Grauburgunder its delicate copper-pink color. Natural yeasts are then allowed to work and initiate spontaneous fermentation. The wine is aged partly in large wooden barrels (500L tonneau barrels (60%)), which Andreas and Steffen manage very well, and partly in stainless steel tanks. This makes the Rings Grauburgunder more complex, multifaceted, and aromatic in a positive sense.
