The Rings Pfalz Spätburgunder Estate Wine 2021 from Weingut Rings is a bone-dry red wine from the Pfalz. The Spätburgunder grapes grow in both Kallstadt and Freinsheim vineyards, which are cultivated by the Rings brothers Andreas and Steffen themselves, from pruning to harvest.

With an estate wine, the focus is on the typicality of the grape variety rather than that of a specific location or site. Thus, the Spätburgunder Pfalz from Weingut Rings showcases the characteristics of its varietal: ripe cherries and a beautiful spiciness on the nose, which continues on the palate. It is dense and juicy, bone-dry, with a lively acidity on the finish.

Rings – Winemaking

The Rings brothers place great importance on healthy soils, as only from them can healthy vines stand and healthy grapes grow. They begin early with the sowing of buckwheat, clover, and radishes, which prevents soil erosion, attracts beneficial insects, and retains moisture in the soil, which is revitalized with the application of horse manure as a natural fertilizer. Canopy management is also important for the quality of the wine: double shoots are removed manually, and depending on the weather conditions, the grapes are defoliated and thinned to aerate them. The small-berried grapes from French clones are hand-picked at the optimal harvest time, sorted and selected again at the winery, and destemmed. After a short maceration period, natural yeasts are allowed to work and initiate spontaneous fermentation. The wine was aged for 15 months in used barriques.
