Grauburgunder 2024 from Weingut Rings in the Pfalz – [VDP]

The Rings Grauburgunder 2024 from Weingut Rings is a dry VDP.Gutswein made from grapes from vineyards in Freinsheim and Kallstadt. These vineyards are farmed close to nature by Andreas and Steffen Rings and are in conversion to organic viticulture. The skillful use of wood gives the Rings Grauburgunder from the Pfalz spice and power, and supports its varietal-typical aromas of ripe pear, white blossoms, and local walnuts. On the palate, it is pleasantly elegant and fresh with a fine creaminess.

Rings – Winemaking

The Rings brothers place great importance on healthy soils, vines, and grapes. They start early by sowing buckwheat, clover, and radishes, which prevents soil erosion, attracts beneficial insects, and retains moisture in the soil, which is revitalized with the application of horse manure as a natural fertilizer. Canopy management is also important for the quality of the wine: double shoots are removed manually, and depending on the weather, the grapes are defoliated and thinned to aerate them. The grapes are hand-picked and selected at the optimal harvest time, and some are pressed as whole clusters. After a short maceration period, natural yeasts are allowed to act and initiate spontaneous fermentation. Aging takes place partly in large wooden barrels (30% in 500l tonneaux), which Andreas and Steffen manage very well, and partly in stainless steel tanks. This makes the wine more complex, multifaceted, and aromatic in a positive sense.
