Karl May Winery – NOrange Silvaner
The NOrange Silvaner 2022 from Karl May Winery is an orange wine from Rheinhessen. First it was an experiment, now it's a statement: Karl May's orange wine delivers on its promise. An orange wine is made when the pressed grapes are left on the mash for a period of time. This is followed by the actual pressing and aging in wooden barrels. Peter and Fritz May explicitly forgo filtration and sulfur during bottling. It comes in a bright orange color and doesn't fit into any traditional wine scheme.
The NOrange Silvaner initially shows ripe fruit, juicy yellow apple, meadow hay and herbs on the nose, with a fine spice of white pepper on the finish. The wine's structure is more reminiscent of red wine and boasts exceptional aromatics.
NOrange – an Orange Wine after all
The NOrange is a skin-fermented orange wine made from Silvaner grapes, hand-picked on September 9, 2022. The grapes were allowed to ferment with their skins. After 14 days, the must was pressed off and filled into 500L tonneaus, where it was allowed to mature until it was bottled unsulfured and unfiltered.
The result is an orange-colored wine with wonderful aromatics, the full bouquet of Silvaner, and a great mouthfeel.
