Sattlerhof Kranachberg – Sauvignon Blanc from a Top Site
The Sattlerhof Kranachberg Sauvignon Blanc 2019 is one of Austria's best white wines – a wine from the top Kranachberg site – a "Große STK Lage" (Grand Cru STK Site). It has currently been awarded 97 points by the gourmet magazine Falstaff.
From the very beginning, the Sattlerhof Kranachberg captivates. On the nose, it displays ripe fruit notes of pear and yellow tropical fruits, exotic lychee, a delicate scent reminiscent of Earl Grey tea, and wonderfully spicy dill. White pepper is also noticeable. On the palate, the juicy balance is delightful; it is deeply mineral with enormous length and complexity.
Sattlerhof Kranachberg Sauvignon Blanc is excellent with Asian dishes, hearty fish, seafood and crustaceans, as well as spring vegetables.
Sattlerhof – Winemaking
Kranachberg is one of, if not the, top sites in Southern Styria. Steep vineyards, unpredictable weather, and diverse soils are the characteristics of the Southern Styrian wine region. This single vineyard extends between Gamlitz and Leutschach and is primarily planted with Sauvignon Blanc (approx. 90%). The unique composition of these soils (calcareous sands with light mica) gives the wine an unmistakable spice with distinctive fruit.
The fully ripe grapes from this top site, which is sustainably and biodynamically farmed, are selectively hand-picked. Definitely one of the most successful wines from the exciting 2019 vintage. In fact, it is still too young to drink, but the 2 years of bottle aging have done it good.
The Sattlerhof Kranachberg Sauvignon Blanc needs a lot of air, showing very mineral notes of cold smoke and white marble right from the start. These do not come, as one might think, from oak aging, as the wine was completely fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks, but from the unique site. With time, more and more aromas emerge, reminiscent of fennel, asparagus, and green apples. Then it releases exotic yellow fruit notes such as honeydew melon and pineapple.
Optimal drinking maturity until 2033 and beyond.
